Exploding balloons of milk frozen in high-speed photos

Balls of shadow dissolve into a seething mist of droplets. To capture the way a balloon deforms as it bursts, James Huse, Josh Eaton and Steve Keylock spent hours working in darkness. They filled balloons with milk, hung them up in a studio (the photos are inverted), turned out the lights and left a camera with its shutter open. A craft knife on a stick was used to burst the balloons and the resulting pop triggered a flash of light.

"The flash exposes the image," says Huse. "So long as the shutter is open at the time around the reaction then you'll capture it."

Howard Stone of Princeton University and his colleagues have also been snapping bursting bubbles, this time on a liquid surface.

When they pop, they disperse into a ring of smaller bubbles (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature09069). The physics of the process is the same with any liquid - even viscous oil - and Stone's team believes the work could provide insights into how aerosols form.

Another team has looked at the fate of particles inside a hypothetical atomic-scale balloon when it pops. Do the particles scatter according to the rules of classical mechanics or are they governed by quantum lore?

The answer is both, according to Maxim Olshanii of the University of Massachusetts Boston and colleagues (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature06838). Olshanii says that there may be implications for the emerging field of quantum computing. "We could try to minimise quantum information loss," he says.

[OOC] Fantasia: Guilds of Magic

This is the auto-generated OOC topic for the roleplay "Fantasia: Guilds of Magic"

The world has always been filled with magic, and in that world of magic lay many guilds which members reside as families with tight bonds. In guilds people do many things such as daily jobs which upon completion give them gold, protect those in which cannot protect themselves - not everyone in the world possesses magic, or sometimes they entertain the public. Until recently it was believed that only humans lived in this world, any other race was something found in a fairy tale. But recently, there have been people claiming they have seen vampires and werewolves, causing great commotion in both the guilds and general society. Most people thought these were just pranks and jokes, or in the least, people who were all and all wrong. But one of the chairmen of the guilds decided he was going to investigate the whole ordeal. He came across what ended up being a werewolf guild, realizing that those stories were in fact true, he told the news to his guild which sometime later became news to the rest of the world. Some months later, several things happened. Hunter have now made themselves known as well, these people are people with a hatred towards the other kind, with every intent on killing them or turning them in for cash. As well as, Fantasia has been letting in these other races into their guild as new members, but they are only taking a few, as Fantasia is a guild that gets in enough trouble on a daily basis already. Fantasia is the guild known to be one of the strongest if not the strongest guilds around. They have a bad reputation because they have many young members, but also do a lot of good along side that. But somewhere far away the dark guild, Shadow, as been recruiting new members as well. Their goal is unknown, as are things like their location, and half of their members.

So what is going on then? Hunters are now looking to take down everyone not human in the world, and the most notorious dark guild is looking to cause trouble, which usually means they are looking for blood. That knowledge not known to anyone, what will happen?

Meanwhile, new members are just joining Fantasia and Shadow, and the rest of the guilds going about their daily lives. Jobs are being done, and hunters are getting their new 'jobs'.

Races:

Human: The most common races are human, it's what you will see around most places. Humans have no special ability nor looks.

Vampires: Most keep to themselves, or stay near other vampires, however there have been exceptions recently. Vampires range from pale, to extremely pale. They are usually sensitive to sunlight, though it doesn't physically harm them nor does it mean they dislike it. They are more adapt to the night, and yes they do drink blood. However, it can be from anything which bares blood. Not all vampires are evil nor are they all good. They tend to be more agile and fast than most people (no not super fast like twilight nor do they shine in the sun.) It is also said that vampires can taste the feelings of their mates when drinking their blood.

Sub info: Royal vampires. Royals are extremely rare and there is only a few of them in the world. They are the most powerful of vampires, and sometimes though at later ages, can learn more than the average magic user. (Example: Can adapt to more than one element, more spells, or more summons.) However, they are usually the first to be in danger because of the imbalance in power they bring. Most royals have one or two wizards or mages which watch after them.

Demons: Because they have no distinguished traits they look just like humans, however they can be figured out by their personality. They are dark and twisted most of the time though not all entirely evil. However most tend to be. Demons are rare and have a great amount of physical endurance.

Werewolves: A dying breed. Werewolves are more like shape shifters, and change into their wolf form at will, not by the presence of a full moon. They tend to be more muscular and have enhanced senses when in their wolf form, along with they pick up the traits of a wolf. They come in all shapes and sizes when changed.

Sub info: Pure breeds. Pure breeds tend to be children of two full werewolves whom are extremely strong magical users. They tend to be good in defensive magics. However, there are very few in existance.

Types: There are four different types of magics in existence. There are mages, summoners, weapon masters, and there are wizards. Mages, are also known to be elementalists, in which can control one single element and manipulate their element in many different ways. There are summoners, who have contracts with monsters they eventually tame which they summon for battle and fight with. There are weapon masters (think requip) who are able to equip and change different armors or weapons (rarely both). Then there are wizards, who know specific spells and are also known as castors because their spells are recited. Wizards must learn there spells from books, and can only know a certain amount of spells depending on their level of training.

Abilities: For mages, they can control one of the following elements: Wind, water, fire, earth, ice, lightning, light, darkness (or more rare things like metal and poison). The first four being the most common elements, and the last three being the rarest and hardest to control. Most do not master lightning, light, or darkness until an older age. However, they do not start out knowing and mastering the element. They first, know a tiny bit of wind, water, fire, and earth. However their control is lacking and the power is limited, in their teenage years they then gain control of one, or some the more rare elements are replaced. From then they progress with their element.

Dragon slayers: Dragon slayers do exist, they are of course rare (and I do not want everyone to be one.)

For wizards, they are able to learn spells, however can never control any element. Nor are they able to heal, no one is. from 14-16 they can learn up to 3 spells. 16-17 4 spells. 18-20 5. From 21 onward it depends on the individuals solo training and the amount of power they hold.

For weapon masters, which are somewhat rare, they are able to requip weapons or armor (sometimes but very rarely both). They then take on the property of said armor or weapon and can change multiple times in battle. They are extremely talented with their weapons specifically but are overall masters of most weapons.

For summoners, who are extremely rare and for the most part the weaker of the mages or at least undervalued, they are able to summon creatures whom they have created contract with. Once they create a contract with a creature, they are contracted with them for life. They must choose carefully. They can only have three in a life time. They can only also summon one at a time.

Hunters: Hunters are normal humans with no magical abilities whom have a hatred for the other races. Though they do not have magical powers they tend to be skilled with weapons and tactics. And recently, some have gotten their hands on some pretty interesting weapons..they may even hold their own with the magical users.

Guilds:

Guilds are places in which all magical users die to get into. They house magic users, consist of a chairman to guide them, give them jobs, and have mentors which help them progress with their magic. Usually, humans stuck to human guilds, vampires in vampire guilds, etc. The same went for intentions, those who had back intentions were hidden away in their own guilds. Now, one of the most notorious guilds Fantasia, has been accepting all kinds of members. Granted, all their old members are humans, but their chairman has decided it is unfair to not let others in. However along with this another guild has been letting anyone in, Shadow...but because they are hidden away and keep to themselves no one knows their intentions just yet.

Guild List:

Fantasia: The most notorious and popular guild around. It is full of youngsters though still houses it's old timers. It is now letting in all races. This is one of the most powerful guilds around. However, they tend to cause trouble now and again. The chairman however is carefree and can be oblivious too it at times.

Amaranth: A human only guild, they are of normal size and are on good terms with Fantasia. They are slowly becoming weary of their new members however, as they do not accept non humans themselves.

Shadow: Known for the darkest and worst of witches and wizards. They show no mercy and are always up to no good. However, whenever they are not up to something, they seem to never be able to be found. They have been letting in new members recently.

Witchblade: A vampire only guild, no one knows much about it because they tend to keep to themselves, or at least they used to.

Eternal Wings: An all demon guild. Tend to get themselves into trouble a lot. Not too friendly.

Moonlight: The Werewolf guild. Small in size, but the members tend to be friendly. However because there are so little werewolves in existance they tend to be on the downlow should a situation arise.

Jobs:

There as such jobs that are posted on the bulletin boards of the guilds that can be done to earn currency. Some people go alone and some people on a team. Jobs can involve fighting or no fighting, they are for all different types of things, the harder they are the more money they give.

North Carolina runaway No. 1 in AP preseason poll

North Carolina broke a tie with its fiercest rival and moved into one with one of college basketball's most storied programs.

The Tar Heels, who return all five starters from the team that reached the regional finals last season, were the runaway No. 1 in The Associated Press' men's preseason Top 25 on Friday. It is the eighth time they have received that honor since the preseason poll started in 1961-62.

That breaks a tie with Duke, North Carolina's Tobacco Road rival, and moves them into a tie with UCLA, the program that dominated the sport unlike any other under coach John Wooden.

"It shows that North Carolina basketball has had a tremendous level of success over a long, long period of time," coach Roy Williams said. "We are very proud of that and this is another indication of the program's great history."

North Carolina received all but three of the No. 1 votes cast by the 65-member national media poll, finishing well ahead of Kentucky, the team that eliminated the Tar Heels last season one step from the Final Four.

With the frontcourt of Harrison Barnes, John Henson and Tyler Zeller all passing up the chance to enter the NBA draft and point guard Kendall Marshall having a chance to run the team for the whole season instead of just the last 20 games, the Tar Heels have the personnel to start the season comfortably atop the poll.

"I'm happy that people feel this positive about our team, but the great thing about college basketball is you have to get it done on the court," Williams said. "This gives us a goal and it's up to us to work hard and be the best team we can be to reach that goal."

North Carolina has been the preseason No. 1 in three of the last five seasons. In 2008-09, the Tar Heels were a unanimous preseason No. 1 with five starters back, and that season ended with a national championship.

The Tar Heels' other preseason No. 1s were in 2007-08 (Final Four), 1993-94 (second round), 1986-87 (regional final), 1983-84 (regional semifinals), 1981-82 (national championship) and 1977-78 (first round).

"We have the opportunity to win it all, and we have the opportunity to completely fail," Barnes has said. "It's just a matter of we continue to stay humble and continue to take the right steps and get our way back on top like we did last year."

Ohio State, which got one first-place vote, was third and defending national champion Connecticut, which received the other two No. 1 votes, was fourth.

Kentucky has starters Terrence Jones and Darius Miller back to lead yet another outstanding recruiting class by coach John Calipari. Ohio State has All-America Jared Sullinger and senior guard William Buford back, while Connecticut has to find a way to replace All-America Kemba Walker, the all-everything guard who carried the Huskies through their 11-game winning streak to the national championship. Don't feel too bad for Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun as freshman Andre Drummond will give the Huskies a presence under the basket.

Syracuse, Duke, Vanderbilt, Florida, Louisville and Pittsburgh rounded out the top 10.

Memphis was 11th followed by Baylor, Kansas, Xavier, Wisconsin, Arizona, UCLA, Michigan, Alabama and Texas A&M. The last five teams were Cincinnati, Marquette, Gonzaga, California and Missouri.

Fourteen of the teams in the preseason poll were ranked in last season's final poll. Ohio State was No. 1 entering the NCAA tournament and the Buckeyes lost to Kentucky in the regional semifinals.

Duke was No. 1 in the 2010-11 preseason poll and went on to finish third in the final poll before losing to Arizona in the regional semifinals. Connecticut wasn't ranked before last season but worked its way to No. 9 in the final poll.

Vanderbilt had the longest stretch of not being in the preseason Top 25. The Commodores were last in the rankings in 1993-94. Xavier was next with its last preseason appearance in 2002-03, while Cincinnati was last in 2003-04.

Vanderbilt has all the starters back from a team that came on strong at the end of the regular season only to be knocked out of the NCAA tournament in the first round by Richmond.

"There has been some fixation on our early exits from the tournament, but we have been very excited about this team for a very long time. For good reason, we have good players," coach Kevin Stallings said. "If this team can stay healthy, I think we have a chance to have the best team we have ever had."

The Big East has six ranked teams, two more than the Big 12 and Southeastern Conference, while the Big Ten and Pac-12 had three each. Even with all the offcourt doings in the Big East ? Syracuse and Pittsburgh leaving, TCU never really showing up and some others ready to head elsewhere ? the conference that set the record for teams in an NCAA tournament last season is going to be tough again.

"In the past five years we've had the best basketball league in the country," Calhoun said. "We had 11 teams in the NCAA tournament last year and on paper today nine of them would be in it again."

Duke has the longest current streak of being ranked at 78 polls, a run that started with the preseason poll in 2007-08. Kansas is next with 46, a streak that began on Feb. 2, 2009.

Obama College Loan Plan Aims At An Old Voting Bloc

WASHINGTON ? Seeking to shore up support among cash-strapped college graduates and students struggling with rising tuition costs, President Barack Obama is outlining a plan to allow millions of student loan recipients to lower their payments and consolidate their loans.

Outside of mortgages, student loans are the No. 1 source of household debt. Young voters were an important bloc in Obama's 2008 campaign, and student loan debt is a common concern among Occupy Wall Street protesters.

Obama's announcement, to take place Wednesday in Denver, comes the same day a new report is being released by the College Board. It shows average in-state tuition and fees at four-year public colleges rose $631 this fall, or 8.3 percent, compared with a year ago. Nationally, the cost of a full credit load has passed $8,000, an all-time high.

The White House said Obama will use his executive authority to provide student loan relief in two ways.

First, he will accelerate a measure passed by Congress that reduces the maximum repayment on student loans from 15 percent of discretionary income annually to 10 percent. The White House wants it to go into effect in 2012, instead of 2014. In addition, the White House says the remaining debt would be forgiven after 20 years, instead of 25. About 1.6 million borrowers could be affected.

Second, he will allow borrowers who have a loan from the Federal Family Education Loan Program and a direct loan from the government to consolidate them into one loan. The consolidated loan would carry an interest rate of up to a half percentage point less than before. This could affect 5.8 million more borrowers.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan told reporters on a conference call that the changes could save some borrowers hundreds of dollars a month.

"These are real savings that will help these graduates get started in their careers and help them make ends meet," Duncan said.

The White House said the changes will carry no additional costs to taxpayers.

Last year, Congress passed a law that lowered the repayment cap and moved all student loans to direct lending by eliminating banks as the middlemen. Before that, borrowers could get loans directly from the government or from the Federal Family Education Loan Program; the latter were issued by private lenders but basically insured by the government. The law was passed along with the health care overhaul with the anticipation that it could save about $60 billion over a decade.

Today, there are 23 million borrowers with $490 billion in loans under the Federal Family Education Loan Program. Last year, the Education Department made $102.2 billion in direct loans to 11.5 million recipients.

Increases in federal aid have helped ease the burden on students dealing with tuition increases, the White House Council of Economic Advisers said in a report Wednesday.

"Despite large increases in the published price of college over the past four years, the average student has not seen commensurate increases in the net price of college, defined as the published price minus grants, scholarships and tax benefits," the report said.

Meanwhile, the Education Department and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced a project Tuesday to simplify the financial aid award letters that colleges mail to students each spring. A common complaint is that colleges obscure the inclusion of student loans in financial aid packages to make their school appear more affordable, and the agencies hope families will more easily be able to compare the costs of colleges.

Separately, James Runcie, the Education Department's federal student aid chief operating officer, told a congressional panel Tuesday that the personal financial details of as many 5,000 college students were temporarily viewable on the department's direct loan website earlier this month.

Runcie said site was shut down while the matter was resolved, and the affected students have been notified and offered credit monitoring.

Survey: Home prices up in half of major US cities

(AP) ? Home prices rose in August in half of major cities measured by a private survey, a sign that prices are stabilizing in some hard-hit portions of the country.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index showed Tuesday that prices increased in August from July in 10 of the 20 cities tracked. That marked the fifth straight month that at least half of the cities in the survey showed monthly gains.

The biggest price increases were in Washington, Chicago and Detroit. The greatest declines were in Atlanta and Los Angeles.

The August data provides a "modest glimmer of hope" that some areas may have bottomed out and could be turning around, said David M. Blitzer, chairman of S&P's index committee.

He noted that cities in the Midwest ? Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis ? have shown some strength since May.

In Detroit, the recovering auto industry has helped lead a small rebound in the housing market. Home prices have risen 2.7 percent since August 2010, making it one of only two cities to show a year-over-year gain in that time. The other was Washington.

Detroit was one of the hardest hit after the housing bubble burst more than four years ago. Home prices there are coming off 1995 levels. So the gains are relatively small compared to how far prices have fallen.

In Minneapolis and Chicago, fewer homes are being put up for sale, leading to higher prices and better sales figures. That's likely due to fewer foreclosures in those cities. September's drop in homes for sale in the Twin Cities was the largest decline in inventory in more than seven years, according to the Minneapolis Area Association of Realtors.

Still, Robert Shiller, the co-founder of the index and a Yale economics professor, said in an interview on CNBC that overall home prices were "flat" and a recovery in the struggling housing market was not on the horizon.

The index, which covers half of all U.S. homes, measures prices compared with those in January 2000 and creates a three-month moving average. The August data are the latest available.

Prices are certain to fall again once banks resume millions of foreclosures. They have been delayed because of a yearlong government investigation into mortgage lending practices.

"We certainly believe the bulk of the decline in housing is behind us and indeed, one might even say that 'housing' is more likely to improve from here," said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist for BTIG. "But given the overwhelming level of inventory that remains on the market ... further price declines seem almost assured to help clear the market."

Home prices have stabilized in coastal cities over the past six months, helped by a rush of spring buyers and investors. But this year, home prices in many cities, including Cleveland, Detroit, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Tampa, have reached their lowest points since the housing bust more than four years ago.

Many people are reluctant to purchase a home more than two years after the recession officially ended. Even the lowest mortgage rates in history haven't been enough to lift sales.

Some can't qualify for loans or meet higher down payment requirements. Many with good credit and stable jobs are holding off because they fear that home prices will keep falling.

Sales of previously occupied home sales are on pace to match last year's dismal figures ? the worst in 13 years. Sales of new homes fell to a six-month low in August and this year could be the worst since the government began keeping records a half century ago.

Foreclosures and short sales ? when a lender accepts less for a home than what is owed on a mortgage ? makes up about 30 percent of all home sales last month, up from about 10 percent in past years. The large number of unsold homes and foreclosures are sending prices lower and hurting sales.

Dietary patterns may be linked to increased colorectal cancer risk in women

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2011) ? Researchers may have found a specific dietary pattern linked to levels of C-peptide concentrations that increase a woman's risk for colorectal cancer.

"High red meat intake, fish intake, sugar-sweetened beverage intake, but low coffee, whole grains and high-fat dairy intake, when taken as a whole, seemed to be associated with higher levels of C-peptide in the blood," said Teresa T. Fung, S.D., R.D., professor of nutrition at Simmons College in Boston, who presented the data at the 10th AACR International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, held Oct. 22-25, 2011.

C-peptide is a marker of insulin secretion that can be measured in a person's blood. High levels of insulin may promote cell growth and multiplication. One of the major characteristics of cancer is aberrant cell growth. Higher levels of C-peptide, and therefore insulin, may promote cancer cell growth.

"Colon cancer seems to be one of the cancers that are sensitive to insulin," Fung said. "This research has helped us to put together a fuller picture of what may be going on in terms of mechanisms and the relationship between food and colorectal cancer risk."

Fung and colleagues surveyed a sample of women every two years about general health information including whether or not they had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. The researchers also assessed women's diets in a separate questionnaire mailed to them every four years. The dietary questionnaire listed more than 130 types of foods and asked the women how often they were consuming each type.

After 22 years of follow-up, 985 cases of colorectal cancer and 758 cases of colon cancer were diagnosed among the women. The researchers found that those women who most often consumed high amounts of red meat, fish and sugar-sweetened beverages and low amounts of high-fat dairy, coffee and whole grains had a 35 percent increased risk for colorectal cancer.

The researchers also compared the dietary information of women who were lean and active with that of women who were overweight and sedentary.

"We found that people who were overweight or inactive seemed more sensitive to this dietary pattern. Their risk for colorectal cancer was much higher than those people who were lean and active," Fung said. "Overweight people are already at risk for insulin resistance. We think that if you then add this unique dietary pattern on top of that, which was associated with higher C-peptide levels, they are much more prone to develop colorectal cancer."

Fung said people should pay attention to the foods they consume for a multitude of health reasons.

"Although avoiding the dietary patterns that we found is not necessarily the most comprehensive way to prevent colorectal cancer, it definitely targets one pathway of the disease," she said.
