(AP) ? Three American students arrested during a protest in Cairo caught flights out of Egypt early Saturday, according to an airport official and an attorney for one of the trio.

The three Americans were arrested on the roof of a university building near Cairo's Tahrir Square last Sunday. Officials accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters.

Luke Gates, 21, and Derrik Sweeney, 19, left the Egyptian capital Saturday on separate flights to Frankfurt, Germany, an airport official in Cairo said. Gregory Porter, 19, also left the country, his attorney said.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

An Egyptian court ordered the release of Gates, Porter and Sweeney on Thursday. All were studying at the American University in Cairo.

Attorney Theodore Simon, who represents Porter, a student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, said police escorted the three students to the Cairo airport Friday. Simon later said his client was on a flight.

"I am pleased and thankful to report that Gregory Porter is in the air. He has departed Egyptian airspace and is on his way home," Simon said, though he declined to say when Porter was expected back in the U.S.

Simon said he and Porter's mother both spoke by phone with the student, who is from the Philadelphia suburb of Glenside.

"He clearly conveyed to me ... that he was OK," Simon told The Associated Press.

Gates is a student at Indiana University. It wasn't clear when he was expected back in the U.S.

Joy Sweeney told the AP her son, a 19-year-old Georgetown University student from Jefferson City, Missouri, would fly from Frankfurt to Washington, then on to St. Louis. She said family will meet him when he arrives late Saturday.

"I am ecstatic," Sweeney said Friday. "I can't wait for him to get home tomorrow night. I can't believe he's actually going to get on a plane. It is so wonderful."

Sweeney said she had talked with her son Friday afternoon and "he seemed jubilant."

"He thought he was going to be able to go back to his dorm room and get his stuff," she said. "We said, 'No, no, don't get your stuff, we just want you here.'"

She said the American University in Cairo will ship his belongings home.

Sweeney had earlier said she did not prepare a Thanksgiving celebration this week because the idea seemed "absolutely irrelevant" while her son still was being held.

"I'm getting ready to head out and buy turkey and stuffing and all the good fixings so that we can make a good Thanksgiving dinner," she said Friday.

Closer to a cure for eczema

Thursday, November 24, 2011

Scientists have found that a strain of yeast implicated in inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema, can be killed by certain peptides and could potentially provide a new treatment for these debilitating skin conditions. This research is published today in the Society for Applied Microbiology's journal, Letters in Applied Microbiology.

20% of children in the UK suffer from atopic eczema and whilst this usually clears up in adolescence, 7% of adults will continue to suffer throughout their lifetime. Furthermore, this type of eczema, characterized by dry, itchy, flaking skin, is increasing in prevalence. Whilst the cause of eczema remains unknown, one known trigger factor is the yeast Malassezia sympodialis.

This strain of yeast is one of the most common skin yeasts in both healthy individuals and those suffering from eczema. The skin barrier is more fragile and often broken in those suffering from such skin conditions, and this allows the yeast to cause infection which then further exacerbates the condition. Scientists at Karolinska Institute in Sweden looked for a way to kill Malassezia sympodialis without harming healthy human cells.

The researchers looked at the effect on the yeast of 21 peptides which had either; cell-penetrating or antimicrobial properties. Cell-penetrating peptides are often investigated as drug delivery vectors and are able to cross the cell membrane, although the exact mechanism for this is unknown. Antimicrobial peptides, on the other hand, are natural antibiotics and kill many different types of microbe including some bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Tina Holm and her colleagues at Stockholm University and Karolinska Institute, added these different peptides types to separate yeast colonies and assessed the toxicity of each peptide type to the yeast. They found that six of the 21 peptides they tested successfully killed the yeast without damaging the membrane of keratinocytes, human skin cells.

Tina commented "Many questions remain to be solved before these peptides can be used in humans. However, the appealing combination of being toxic to the yeast at low concentrations whilst sparing human cells makes them very promising as antifungal agents. We hope that these peptides in the future can be used to ease the symptoms of patients suffering from atopic eczema and significantly increase their quality of life."

The next step will be to further examine the mechanism(s) used by the peptides to kill yeast cells, in order to develop a potential treatment for eczema and other skin conditions.

US welcomes Bahrain human rights report (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The White House says Bahrain's government must hold those responsible for human rights violations accountable following the release of a report detailing torture, excessive force and fast-track justice in the Persian Gulf kingdom.

In a statement, the White House says the report identifies a number of disturbing rights abuses during a government crackdown on protesters early this year. And the White House says the report's recommendations can serve as a foundation for advancing reconciliation and reform.

The study was authorized by Bahrain's Sunni rulers in a bid to ease tensions in the Western-allied kingdom.

The White House says King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa's decision to establish the commission that carried out the report was a courageous one.

Growing up Geek: Chris Pirillo

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, an ongoing feature where we take a look back at our youth and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. Today, we have a special guest: internet entrepreneur, tech support blogger, media personality and geek, Chris Pirillo

Before I begin, let me just say: I'm not a slave to your mental delusions of who you think I am.

I have to get that out of the way largely because I've been "doing things" publicly for so long that some people have already formed opinions about me and what they believe I stand for. That's their problem, not mine.

I don't know if there was ever a specific moment I found myself attracted to electronic objects? I certainly recall playing with my cousin's Merlin and watching with wonder as my brother fiddled with his Alphie. I was certainly mesmerized by calculators, but that didn't lead me to develop advanced math skills.

Michelle Williams: The 'perfect' Marilyn Monroe? (The Week)

New York ? In My Week with Marilyn, the indie film goddess channels the boop-boop-a-doop of one of cinema's most iconic stars ? and critics are smitten

Michelle Williams, known for quietly disappearing into introspective roles in films like Brokeback Mountain and Blue Valentine, is among her generation's most critically-praised actresses. But how does she acquit herself playing one of American cinema's most famous, larger-than-life women? In My Week with Marilyn, released Wednesday, Williams portrays Marilyn Monroe during the height of her magnetism in a behind-the-scenes look at the icon shooting 1957's The Prince and the Showgirl alongside Laurence Olivier. Despite early doubts that the twice-Oscar-nominated Williams could capture Monroe's out-sized personality, critics are saying she's "perfect" in the role, and worthy of a third Oscar nod (watch trailer below). Is her portrayal that good?

She is "perfection": Watching Michelle Williams embody Marilyn Monroe is "a magical experience," says Rex Reed at The New York Observer. The actress' "incandescent performance" shows the "conflicted woman behind the diamonds and the sunglasses" better than any previous bioflick or imitation. It takes a while to get used to seeing Williams as Monroe ? "I've seen drag queens who look more like the real Marilyn ? but it soon becomes apparent that she is "letter perfect," assuming the role "like new skin."
"Michelle Williams in yet another impossibly starmaking turn with a sublime performance as Marilyn Monroe"

And easily the best part of the film: It's a treat to see Williams "glam it up after a career of playing ordinary women with dirt under their fingernails," says Rene Rodriguez at The Miami Herald. And indeed, she succeeds at making Marilyn Monroe "simultaneously seem larger than life and heartbreakingly human." But her astonishing performance "is the soul of this otherwise featherweight bauble" ? the film doesn't rise to the level of the actress. Williams' star turn, however, makes My Week with Marilyn worth the price of admission.
"My Week with Marilyn"

She almost gets it, but not quite: Michelle Williams "tries her best" to capture the essence of Monroe in the film, says Manohla Dargis at The New York Times, "and sometimes that's almost enough." Physically, she's too thin and has the wrong complexion, though she "whispers and bobbles nicely." A capable actress, Williams is underserved by a script that offers "a catalog of Monroe stereotypes." By having her recreate all of the icon's most famous photos, poses, and memorable lines ? "nude Marilyn, tousled Marilyn, singing Marilyn" ? the film itself thwarts Williams' efforts to "turn the idol into a person."
"Glamorous sex goddess, longing to be human"

Samsung And Google Still Talking Google TV, Won?t Launch At CES Anyway

samsung-logo-sign110324120125-260x152Uh-oh. Samsung and Google are still in talks regarding its upcoming Google TV offering. Reuters is reporting that Samsung's president indicated that the two companies are in "late-stage talks" and that Samsung's devices will launch in early 2012, just not at CES like it was previously thought. Google has been working with Samsung for sometime now. In fact Samsung demonstrated a Google TV companion device at last year's CES. Here's a demo and the press release. But here we are, almost a full year later and Samsung has still yet to release a model, which in retrospect, was probably for the best. Isn't that right, Logitech?

WMUR/UNH poll: Newt's in second (Politico)

Capping off a couple of conflicting polls on the state of the New Hampshire primary, the WMUR/UNH?survey weighs in to show Newt Gingrich placing a distant second to Mitt Romney:

In the survey of 413 Republicans and independents who will likely vote in next year?s presidential primary, Romney received 42 percent support, his highest number in the survey since February 2010. The real story might be Gingrich, who in a month?s time, went from being tied for sixth place to second place with 15 percent. That?s a gain of 9 points.

In our last poll a month ago, Georgia businessman Herman Cain was in second, but he has fallen to a fifth place tie with Rick Perry.

While Gingrich rose and Cain fell, Ron Paul continues to remain steady, with 12 percent support, in third place. Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman also maintained the same 8 percent support that he had a month ago. He is in fourth place.

Ahead of the Bell: GDP (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The U.S. economy likely grew at a solid pace in the second half of the year after nearly stalling in the first six months.

Economists predict the government won't change its initial estimate of 2.5 percent annual growth for the July-September quarter, based on a survey by FactSet. The Commerce Department will release the second estimate at 8:30 a.m. EST Tuesday.

Analysts say the economy is growing at closer to 3 percent in the October-December quarter, after seeing favorable October reports on retail sales, home construction and factory output.

The growth, while modest, is not nearly enough to lower the unemployment rate, which has been stuck near 9 percent for more than two years. And economists caution that their brighter outlook hinges on Europe's financial crisis, which could trigger a recession in that region and slow U.S. growth next year.

The government makes three estimates of the gross domestic product, the economy's total output of goods and services, each quarter with the revisions based on more complete economic data.

In the first six months of the year, the economy grew at an annual rate of just 0.9 percent. It was the weakest growth since the recession officially ended, which stocked fears over the summer that the economy could be on the verge of another downturn.

The stronger growth in the July-September quarter ? the best quarterly performance in a year ? helped calm those worries. Consumers increased their spending at nearly triple the rate of the previous quarter to drive the growth.

Still, Americans spent more while earning less, and they dipped into their savings to make up the difference. At the same time, businesses invested more in machines and computers, not workers.

Without more jobs and pay raises, consumers are unlikely to be able to sustain those gains.

In October, the economy added a net total of 80,000 jobs. It was the 13th straight month of gains. Still, the additional jobs were fewer than the roughly 125,000 that are needed each month just to keep up with population growth.

There have been signs that the economy and job market are both getting better.

Last week, the government reported further improvement in the number of people seeking unemployment benefits for the first time. The number fell to 388,000, the fewest since April.

Retail sales and factory production both increased in October. While U.S. builders started slightly fewer homes, building permits, a gauge of future construction, surged nearly 11 percent. That gain was led by a 30 percent increase in apartment permits, to their highest level in three years.

Economists at JPMorgan Chase & Co., are now predicting growth of 3 percent this quarter, up from an earlier estimate of 2.5 percent growth.

New Hope for Cancer Testing | TopNews United States

It has been recently revealed that the Cancer Research UK has started the process of DNA matching. In this process, there are going to be tests conducted on as many as 9,000 cancer sufferers. They are being asked to come and be part of the research which might be able to find a possible cure for their disease.

In this test, the samples from the tumors will be put to test to decipher whether or not there are any gene faults in it. The tests shall be then monitored by the Cardiff, London and Birmingham laboratories.

The Cancer Research UK shall ask the patients to be a part of the initial stages of the research. This research will not harm the current treatment pattern of the patients. It was revealed by Prof. Malcolm Mason, from the Cardiff Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre that this is going to be a very interesting initiative and might soon be able to help millions, If the scientists could find the reason for the onset of the disease.

It was revealed by the Cancer Research UK that the aim of the drive was to be able to find a way for effectively testing cancer for the patients in the NHS, which could lead to timely treatment of the same.

"This will play a key part in making targeted treatments available for cancer patients across the UK. We are extremely grateful to all these patients who, by contributing to this research, are allowing us to take great strides towards beating cancer", revealed Professor Malcolm.

It is a matter of time before the pros and cons of this research are out and people can find out whether or not it is really helpful in deciphering cancer.
