Still missing, former UFC fighter Junie Browning is big news in Thailand

Still missing, former UFC fighter Junie Browning is big news in Thailand

Junie Brownie has been out of the UFC's hair for a while, but he's been back in the news over the last week. Apparently, it's a big deal in Thailand.

The former reality star on Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter" got into a big brouhaha at a bar in Phuket on Dec. 13. He fled the hospital where he was being treated for injuries, been missing ever since and the Thai papers are all over the story.

Police have mounted a Phuket-wide hunt for an American man who started one brawl in a Phuket bar then continued it in the emergency treatment ward at Patong Hospital. Police have named the suspect they wish to interview as Allen Browning, 26, a Thai boxer who fled into the night on Sunday in Patong and has not been seen since.

Earlier in the night, Mr Browning allegedly was seen beating up on an expat woman in a bar in Patak Road, Karon. He also lashed out at Thai female bar staff when they tried to intervene, police said.

Four other tourists from Australia and the US also attempted to intervene but Mr Browning lashed out at them, too, police said.

One of those tourist was Simon Menzies. Browning claims it was Menzies, who was the real troublemaker. Fightlinker discovered that Menzies was also in trouble with the law earlier this year during a flight from Sydney to Darwin.

Sydney man Simon Wilson Menzies, 31, was drunk and angry when he told the female cabin crew manager on a flight this week that he could "bring the plane down if he wanted."

Menzies said: "I'm half muslim, half Aboriginal and everyone else is a white a*******. I could f******blow up the plane."

[...] The court heard Menzies was on Jetstar flight JQ81 from Brisbane to Darwin on Tuesday com when he became abusive after being refused a fourth beer. The court heard he was refused service because he continued to be rowdy despite repeated warnings.

After he was refused service Menzies, who is 190cm and solidly built, stood over the cabin crew manager and told her to get the captain. "Send the captain I will f****** smash him I'm the biggest guy on the plane," he said.

None of this comes as much of a shock with Browning. He was nearly kicked off TUF 8 several times for violent outbursts. He survived and was even given two more fights with the promotion.

In 2009, Browning was taken to a Las Vegas area hospital after what was reported to be a failed suicide attempt. He compounded his issue by allegedly attacking a female nurse at the hospital. The UFC immediately released him from his contract. He's gone 1-4 since his stint with the promotion and last fought in August. Frankly, right now fighting is the least of his problems.

NFL Picks - Week 16: In the end, the ghost of Wayne Fontes prevails...only this time he's white and has really bad acne scars.

Week?15 NFL Picks: 8-6-2
NFL results season to date: 105-105-2

College Football results season to date: 29-27-2

Week?16 NFL Picks (winners in parentheses):

Thursday
Texans?vs.?Colts?(Texans, road, -6.5)?Indianapolis?didn't come close to stopping Arian Foster last year. They couldn't stop Ben Tate earlier this season. With the Texans playing conservative behind T.J. Yates and the Colts defense even worse off?now due to injuries, I don't see anything changing.

Saturday
Raiders?vs.?Chiefs (Chiefs, home, -1) Oakland absolutely needs to win this game to remain the the playoff hunt. In?an AFC West where mediocrity is mandatory, that pretty much means that they are?guaranteed to lose.
Broncos?vs.?Bills (Broncos, road, -3)?Tim Tebow and Denver travel to Hell this week in order to take on Buffalo and whoever they have left who isn't injured.
Jaguars?vs.?Titans (Titans, home, -7) If Tennessee wants to make a push at the final Wildcard spot, I'm not so sure that Jake Locker isn't the better option at quarterback right now over Matt Hasselbeck. As a side note,?I can't wait to see the prices in the Jacksonville area fake mustache market bottom-out when new owner Shahid Khan moves the Jaguars to Los Angeles. If Jaguar fans think a $25 million dollar penalty clause in his purchase contract is going to prevent him from moving the team from the worst market in the NFL to what would be by far the largest market, they might as well start praying for Tim Tebow right now...I heard that paper mill just outside of town is hiring.

Cardinals?vs.?Bengals (Cardinals, road, +4.5)?Arizona, lead by their defense, has been?quietly playing the best football in the NFC West over the past month. Granted, that's kind of like saying that Lindsey Lohan is the best actress in her community service class, but at least it's a start. Look for the Cardinals to hang around in a low scoring game with a very similar Cincinnati team.?
Dolphins?vs.?Patriots (Patriots, home, -10)?Miami's defense has been playing well enough that they actually might have a decent shot at slowing down New England's offense. I'm not saying that they will, but at least they have a chance.
Browns?vs.?Ravens?(Browns, road, +13.5)?Cleveland hasn't exactly been lighting up the scoreboard behind Colt McCoy and their West Coast Offense, but they've been hanging close with some tough teams. Baltimore won the first match-up in Cleveland by 14 points, but if the Browns can slow down Ray Rice they should be able to keep things within two scores.
Giants?vs.?Jets?(Giants, road, +3)?I'm not even sure how the New York dynamic works for these two teams. If I hate the Yankees, which of these two teams should I hate, the Jets or the Giants? Season ticket holders aside, this is essentially a road game at home for the Giants since they don't have to travel. With two evenly matched teams both fighting for a Playoff spot, I'll take the better quarterback in Eli Manning and the 3 points.
Vikings?vs.?Redskins (Vikings, road, +6.5)?Minnesota is really not all that awful for a team that only has two wins. Sadly, if Washington had stuck with Rex Grossman?and just accepted his?crappy games every other week, the Pigskins would?be close to .500 and still be in the hunt for the?NFC Division?title. ?
Buccaneers?vs.?Panthers?(Panthers,?home, +7.5) Tampa Bay is the one?team that you can't gamble on under any circumstance this season, while Carolina behind Cam Newton is one of the teams that you don't want to bet against.
Rams?vs.?Steelers?(Steelers, home, -13) Even if Pittsburgh elects to go with Charlie Batch at quarterback, they still have better talent across the board than St. Louis. Not only that, but they have far superior coaching as well.
Chargers?vs.?Lions?(Chargers,?road, +2.5)?With a big running back, a?versatile running back and a vertical passing game, San Diego seems like a match-up nightmare for a Detroit defense that has at least?eight key players?who will be out or limited due to injuries this week. Then again, Detroit should have a field day with their front seven going against an injury ravaged offensive line. In the end, the ghost of Wayne Fontes prevails...only this time he's white and has really bad acne scars.
?49ers?vs.?Seahawks?(49ers, road, -2) San Francisco still isn't getting any respect when it comes to the gambling lines. While the 49ers?are not flashy, they are a solid team that stops the run and doesn't make mistakes That translates to easy money in a gambling world that is influenced by big names and bright lights. If they can shut down Marshawn Lynch and hold on to the ball, look for San Francisco to cover.
Cowboys?vs.?Eagles?(Dallas, home, -1.5)?People are?once again talking about Philadelphia having an outside?shot at running the table and winning the NFC East.?I can assure you that this Eagles team has not changed much from the start of the season and their track record speaks for itself. Sure they have plenty of talent at their skill positions, but the Eagles are a team that is incapable?of putting together a significant winning streak given their glaring holes at linebacker and offensive line. Even though this game means very?little for Dallas?since they still have to beat the Giants next week regardless of what they do against the Eagles in order to make the Playoffs, the Eagles will take themselves out of the Playoff race this week...as if they haven't done so already.

Sunday
Bears?vs.?Packers (Packers, home, -13) Chicago has finally come to the conclusion that Caleb Hanie was not capable of holding down the ship while Jay Cutler is out due to injury. With Mike Martz unwilling to adapt his complex offense even in the event of an injury to his starter, I highly doubt that Josh McCown will fare much better with only six weeks on the roster in which to get up to speed...especially with the Bears traveling to Green Bay.

Monday
Falcons?vs.?Saints (Falcons, road, +7) Superdome or not, prime time or not, these New Orleans and Atlanta are too evenly matched to lay seven points.

Diamond Club: St. John?s releases 2012 baseball schedule

The Johnnies return to the field this February for a run at another successful season.

Baseball fans found some cleats and bats in their stockings this month as St. John?s announced the Red Storm?s schedule for the coming 2012 season.

The 56-game season stretch includes 24 home games and features the fourth annual Big Ten-Big East Challenge, as well as a total of 11 games against teams that participated in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

Head coach Ed Blankmeyer said the high caliber of opponents is significant this season and his team will work hard to match intensity, game by game.

?This is a tough schedule comprised of great RPI [Ratings Percentage Index] teams and tough road trips, but that?s the type of schedule we want to play and we?re excited for the challenge,? said Blankmeyer, who enters into his 17th season as head coach this year. ?Our hope is that the rigors of playing a tough schedule prepare us to reach our goals, which are always to win the conference regular season and tournament crowns, and to compete in the NCAA Tournament.?

The season opens with three games in Florida as part of the Big Ten-Big East Challenge. The Red Storm will face 2011 Big Ten regular season co-champions Michigan State (February 17) to open the season before facing Minnesota (February 18) for the third-consecutive season. St. John?s will conclude its opening weekend against Illinois (February 19), the defending Big Ten Tournament champions and co-regular season champions.

St. John?s then heads to Lubbock, Texas, for three games as part of the Texas Tech-hosted Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic. After playing host Texas Tech (February 24), St. John?s takes on Northern Illinois (February 25) before wrapping up the weekend with another game against the Red Raiders (February 26).

After a pair of midweek contests against North Carolina (February 28), a 2011 College World Series squad, and UNC Wilmington (February 29), the Red Storm travels to Conway, S.C. for the Coastal Carolina Invitational. St. John?s opens the Invitational with a non-conference matchup against Big East foe Pittsburgh (March 2) before taking on Coastal Carolina (March 3). The third game of the Invitational against Illinois (March 4) will be played in Myrtle Beach at BB&T Coastal Field, home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers).

St. John?s returns to the Tri-State area for a midweek game at Fairfield (March 7) before heading south and concluding its season-opening 15-game road trip with a three-game set at Liberty (March 9-11).

Following a midweek home-opener against FDU (March 14), the Red Storm hosts the inaugural Red Storm Baseball Tournament (March 16-18). St. John?s will play Albany (March 16) before another matchup against the Great Danes (March 17) opens a double-header that includes a matchup between Albany and Holy Cross. The Red Storm opens another double-header with a game against Holy Cross (March 18) that precedes a contest between the Crusaders and Great Danes.

After concluding a five-game home stand with a midweek game against LIU (March 21), the Red Storm opens Big East play on the road with a three-game set at Villanova (March 23-25).

St. John?s returns to Queens for the next four games, hosting Maryland (March 28) in midweek action before welcoming West Virginia (March 30-April 1) for a three-game Big East set.

The Red Storm is on the road for the next four games. After traveling to Staten Island for a midweek contest against Wagner (April 3) at Richmond County Bank Stadium, home of the Staten Island Yankees (Class-A affiliate of the New York Yankees), St. John?s heads to New Jersey for a BIG EAST series with Rutgers (April 5-7).

A season-long six-game home stand is next on the schedule for St. John?s. Following a pair of midweek games against Columbia (April 10) and Hofstra (April 11), the Red Storm hosts a three-game series with 2011 NCAA Super Regional participants Connecticut (April 13-15). St. John?s hosts Princeton (April 18), another NCAA Tournament squad, to conclude the home stand.

St. John?s next embarks on a seven-game road trip that begins with a three-game set at Cincinnati (April 20-22). The Red Storm then takes on Boston College (April 24) in a neutral site game in Norwich, Connecticut, that will be played at Dodd Stadium, the home of the Connecticut Tigers (Class-A Short Season affiliate of the Detroit Tigers). St. John?s concludes the road trip with a three-game set at Notre Dame (April 27-29).

The Red Storm returns home to host Iona (April 30) before welcoming USF (May 4-6) for a three-game series. After hosting NYIT (May 9), St. John?s takes to the road for a three-game set at Louisville (May 11-13).

St. John?s concludes the regular season with a four-game homestand. After facing Marist (May 15) for the first time since 1992, the Red Storm hosts Seton Hall (May 17-19) in a rematch of the 2011 Big East Tournament championship game.

The Big East Tournament runs from May 23-27 and will once again be held in Clearwater, Florida, at Bright House Field.

Oytun Ayse Mihalik Indicted On Terrorism-Related Charge

LOS ANGELES ? A California woman was indicted Wednesday on charges accusing her of sending money to Pakistan to help fund terrorist attacks against U.S. military personnel, authorities said.

Oytun Ayse Mihalik, 39, of La Palma, faces three counts of providing material support to terrorists and one count of making a false statement. If convicted of all counts, Mihalik could face up to 53 years in prison.

Mihalik funneled about $2,000 to a person in Pakistan over a three-week period beginning late last year, knowing the money would be used to prepare for and carry out attacks against the U.S. military and others overseas, federal prosecutors said.

Mihalik, who worked as a pharmacist, has been in federal custody since she was arrested in August after she attempted to board a flight to Turkey, her native country.

She previously pleaded not guilty to the false statement charge.

Mihalik lied to federal agents during an interview at Los Angeles International Airport following a six-month trip to Turkey by telling them she never used an alias to wire money overseas and she had only sent funds once, authorities said.

She told investigators the money was meant for a family friend who was having financial problems, according to an affidavit. Authorities wouldn't elaborate about how they know the money Mihalik wired overseas was going to be used for terrorist attacks.

However, court documents reveal Mihalik's arrest is "related to national security investigations in other areas of the United States." As of August, Mihalik had been cooperating with investigators, records show.

"The charges are based on the defendant's intent to cause harm to U.S. military personnel," said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles. "We have not alleged any attacks that may have resulted from the funding because the legal issue is the defendant's intent as to what the money would be used for."

Defense attorney Alan Eisner said no new evidence has been offered up by prosecutors since his client's arrest four months ago, and the money sent overseas was donated to charity.

"The evidence will show she's not funding a terrorist organization," Eisner said.

A trial on the false statement charge was set for February. Mihalik will be arraigned on the new charges at a later date.

Avast, ye landlubbers! I have some exciting news: there will be pirates in the next edition of the Open Lab! AiP?s own examination of the Jolly Roger as a ?pirate brand? made the cut!

This anthology collects 50 of the best examples of science writing online, and the line-up this year is amazing. Many thanks to supreme-editor-in-chief Jennifer Ouellette of Cocktail Party Physics for her hard work. (Full disclosure: I also served as an editor, but we were not permitted to review our own pieces.) You can view the finalists here. NM woman gives birth in truck during snowstorm

Russell delivered Johanna on the side of the road while trying to rush Elizabeth to the Santa Fe hospital during a snowstorm Tuesday morning. (AP Photo/Albuquerque Journal, Eddie Moore)

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) ? Russell LeFevre learned how to birth a baby in nursing school using clamps, blankets, a suction bulb that clears a baby's mouth of mucus and other medical supplies.

When his wife's water broke in the front seat of a truck as it sped down an icy New Mexico highway in a snowstorm Tuesday, LeFevre just had his hands, some jackets and shoelaces.

It was enough.

His wife, Elizabeth, gave birth to a 6-pound, 11-ounce baby girl inside the truck on Old Las Vegas Highway between Canoncito and Santa Fe, The Santa Fe New Mexican reported (http://bit.ly/rRMAgp). The family is well enough to go home to Canoncito on Wednesday.

Elizabeth LeFevre said she started having contractions around midnight Tuesday. The pains intensified enough that by 2 a.m., LeFevre, her husband Russell and their 3-year-old daughter loaded into a truck driven by her brother-in-law and headed for the hospital. They took the highway because Interstate 25 was shut down amid blizzard conditions.

"We got like two miles down the highway, and I told him there was probably no chance we were going to make it to the hospital," Elizabeth LeFevre said. "As soon as I said that, my water broke."

Russell LeFevre said that when he checked his wife after her water broke, the baby was already halfway out. The other half of the baby came out in minutes.

"I turned her (the baby) to the side and gave her a little back slap, and she coughed up some goop, and I wrapped her up in a jacket," he said.

He also put the placenta in a jacket.

Russell LeFevre works as a nurse's assistant at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe and had just graduated from nursing school Dec. 8, so he had some training.

"(But) in the moment I was totally unprepared to deliver a baby in my truck," he said. "I had shoelaces instead of clamps, and I was wiping out her mouth with my finger instead of a suction bulb. It was pretty wild."

During the birth, Russell LeFevre's brother Neil was on the phone with an emergency dispatch operator, who had been talking the family through the birth. The operator advised them to tie off the baby's umbilical cord with a shoelace.

After the baby was born, the family headed for a fire station near Eldorado, but no one answered when they banged on the door. They then approached a state police officer who gave them blankets and called an ambulance to take them to Christus St. Vincent.

The pair named the baby Joanna Mallory LeFevre.

Russell LeFevre said his 3-year-old daughter, Renee, was "so good" during the whole ordeal and tried to comfort his wife through her labor pains by patting her on the head and telling her, "It's going to be OK."

"It was amazing," Russell LeFevre said. "We got her into the ambulance and the paramedic said we did a great job. The baby was healthy and pink and crying."

Prosecutors not investigating Dutch TV cannibalism (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? Dutch prosecutors are not investigating a case of apparent cannibalism on a Dutch TV show in which presenters appeared to consume tiny pieces of each others' flesh that had been surgically removed.

Amsterdam prosecution spokeswoman Yvonne van der Leede said Thursday no investigation is under way. Thijs Verheij, spokesman for broadcaster BNN, said doctors and others involved in the stunt may have broken laws but police probably have more important things to do. BNN has insisted the case is not a hoax.

The show "Guinea Pigs" aired Wednesday and showed footage of what appeared to be the removal of tissue from a buttock of one presenter and the waist of another. In front of a studio audience, the pair described cooked fatty tissue as rubbery and disgusting, and muscle as indistinguishable from other meat.
