Who knew the lowest-scoring NCAA title game in more than six decades not only ended one season but also foreshadowed this one?
Eight months after Connecticut beat Butler, 53-41, in the lowest-scoring championship game since 1949, Division I teams are on pace to set a record for the lowest-scoring season of the shot-clock era.
A statistical analysis by CBSsportsline.com had teams averaging 67.6 points per game (as of earlier this week), which would be the lowest since 1982. The shot clock era began in 1985-86.
Pitt coach Jamie Dixon blamed the lower scores on teams having to play so many non-conference games in a tight window. The Panthers played 13 non-conference games in 42 days, or one about every three days.
Compounding the problem, the Big East's expanded 18-game schedule has forced teams to play conference games the week after Christmas this season and last. The change in the schedule has forced teams in the league to fill their non-conference schedules a week earlier than previous seasons.
Before the Big East schedule was revamped, the Panthers typically played two non-conference games the week after Christmas before the Big East schedule started.
"It's a lot of games early," Dixon said. "That's something that is occurring. Less time to practice, more games. We've definitely been in that situation. We have not practiced as much as we would like. Throw in the injuries. It hasn't been what we would prefer.
"This is a short calendar. You had to fit more games in fewer days. That definitely hasn't helped scoring. You can understand why. That may have something to do with it. It's been interesting watching it."
Pitt has done its part in recent games to contribute to the trend. The Panthers still rank among the highest-scoring teams in the Big East, averaging 74.9 points per game, but they have scored 61 or fewer in three of the past seven games and posted their two lowest-scoring games this season in their past two games.
Pitt lost to Wagner, 59-54, Dec. 23 and lost its Big East opener to Notre Dame, 72-59, Tuesday night. It was the first time the Panthers failed to reach 60 points in consecutive games since February of 2006.
For Pitt, the reasons for the scoring slump appear to be simple. The Panthers have been missing more from the 3-point line than they were earlier in the season. Some high turnover games and some inefficient post play have contributed as well, but bad shooting performances are at the root of the problem.
Pitt is shooting 15.8 percent from 3-point range the past four games after shooting 46.4 percent in the first 10 games.
"We have to shoot the ball better," Dixon said. "There's no question about that. It's been quite a dramatic change in what we were shooting and what we've shot the past four games. The shot selection has been good for the most part. We just have to do a better job."
Sophomore Lamar Patterson does not believe Pitt's offensive problems will linger.
"I think it's just something that happens," he said of the team's shooting slump. "The past few days in practice we've been hitting a bunch of shots. We've been rushing shots in games. Once we get that fixed, our shots will start falling again."
?
NOTES -- Junior point guard Tray Woodall, who played for the first time in a month Tuesday night at Notre Dame, has not practiced the past few days, and his status for the game Sunday against Cincinnati is questionable. "He's not recovering well from the other day," Dixon said. "You guys could see he wasn't at top speed." Dixon said he will see how Woodall, recovering from an abdominal tear, feels today and Sunday before making a decision about Sunday. ... Dixon also said leading scorer Ashton Gibbs did not practice Friday because of an ankle injury. When asked whether Gibbs would play, Dixon said, "We'll see."... Gibbs has been playing through this ankle injury since getting hurt Nov. 30 against Duquense.

Prosecutors had sought a 10-month prison term at Thursday's trial.
A police judge at Amsterdam District Court also ordered the 19-year-old to report to police during all Ajax, Alkmaar and Dutch national team matches for the next two years, according to reports.
Two months of the prison term were suspended, meaning Van W. will only have to serve them if he commits another offense in the next two years. Calls to the court and prosecutors seeking confirmation of the sentence went unanswered Thursday evening.
The match was halted after the attack with Ajax leading 1-0 after Alkmaar coach Gertjan Verbeek ordered his players off the pitch. The match is to be replayed in full next month.
Esteban was sent off for kicking Van W. but authorities later retracted the red card.

The mother of a month-old baby was murdered and dumped in a canal on Christmas Day as her family waited for her to come home and open her presents.
Ruby Love?s body was spotted floating in the Grand Union Canal in Southall, West London, on Sunday morning.
Police believe the 23-year-old was thrown into the water just hours earlier, after being hit on the back of the head and strangled.

Ruby Love: The mother of three was described as 'the most lovely girl'
Miss Love, who also had a two-year-old son and nine-year-old daughter, was last seen at 6pm on Christmas Eve before going out for the evening.
?
She had been expected to return home on Christmas Day to open presents with her children and her mother and sister, with whom she lived in Harrow, North London.
Last night police charged Miss Love?s boyfriend of five years with her murder. Manzar Juma, 27, is due to appear before Brent Magistrates Court later today.
Miss Love?s distraught mother Precious said: ?She was just the most lovely girl, the best daughter I could have asked for.
?We were having our Christmas dinner and opening our presents as we were waiting for her. I waited and waited and I texted her through the night.

Sealed off: Investigators were still at the scene where Miss Love was found
?I waited until it had got to 24 hours after [she left] and then I gave it one more hour, and then there was a knock on the door. It was the police.
?It?s such a loss ? I do not know how we are going to cope.?
The 45-year-old identified her daughter?s body on Boxing Day. She said she appeared to have been hit on the back of? her head, and that the body bore strang- ulation marks.
An initial post-mortem examination was unable to establish a formal cause of death.
Yesterday Miss Love?s sister Sarah, 22, fought back tears as she described her devotion to her children.
?She loved her kids but she was a mother to everyone,? she said. ?She always protected me and I could not protect her. She was an angel. We have just not stopped crying.?I still cannot believe this.?

Murder inquiry: The body of Ruby Love was found in the Grand Union Canal (pictured) in Southall, west London on Christmas Day

Grim discovery: Officers were called to the scene by a member of the public who had spotted the young woman's body
As a tribute, her mother has painted a white cross on Miss Love?s front door under the words: ?Ruby?s Angel House.? The Hindu-Sikh family had converted to Christianity and changed their surname from Malik. Miss Love worked in their property business.
Yesterday police divers were still searching the section of the canal where her body was found. The area forms part of the popular Hillingdon Trail walk.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: ?Police have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a body in the Grand Union Canal.
?Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed anything suspicious on, or before Christmas Day.?
He added that officers ?are aware of? previous incidents which will form part of our investigation?.
? An Indian student ?executed? on Boxing Day may have been the victim of a racially-motivated attack, police said yesterday.
Anuj Bidve, 23, was shot in the side of the head as he walked with friends in Salford, Greater Manchester.
Five people ? including a boy of 16 and two aged 17 ? have been arrested by police on suspicion of murder.
Mr Bidve?s father Subhash, speaking from the family?s home in Pune, Maharashtra, said he learned of his son?s death via a message posted on Facebook.
? A mother was stabbed to death after an apparent domestic dispute.
A man believed to be the 36-year-old?s partner was yesterday fighting for his life in hospital after he was discovered unconscious at their flat.
Neighbours said the victim?s schoolboy son raised the alarm after stumbling out of the family property in Wolverhampton ?covered in blood?.
Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is questioning the rash of cancer cases among Latin American leaders and asking if somehow the U.S. might have a way to induce the illness.
Chavez has long questioned whether the U.S. government could be plotting to oust him, but his latest remarks went far beyond any such theories.
The leftist leader referred to the cancer diagnosis of Argentine President Cristina Fernandez, and noted that he and the leaders of Brazil and Paraguay have also struggled with the illness recently.
Chavez calls it very strange. He says he isn't accusing the U.S. and doesn't have any proof. But he asks, in his words, "Would it be strange if they had developed a technology to induce cancer and no one knew it?"

The benefits that pets can have on our health is amazing. I first learned some of the facts a few years ago when I read the Physical & Medical Health Benefits of Pets article on PetEducation.com
The Dr. Oz Show recently had a segment on the benefits that pets can play on our health. Makes me happy that pets are getting the attention that they deserve! Dr. Oz and his guest, Betty White, talked about how elderly people who live alone but have a pet have to get up in the morning to take care of their pet. When they have a pet, they have to think about someone other than themselves. Here are the benefits of pet ownership that were shared on The Dr. Oz Show.

Dogs: Best pet to increase your overall health.
Dogs increase your overall survival. You walk them, so that gives you both exercise. Also, dog owners who have had a heart attack are 8 times more likely to live a year compared to non-dog owners.
Cats: Best pet to prevent heart attacks and strokes.
Cats dramatically help to reduce your blood pressure. Cat owners have a:
Dr. Oz made the comment, ?if drugs could do this, we?d prescribe pets!?
Birds: Best pet for detecting a diabetic attack.
Birds are so sensitive that they can actually identify when a person has diabetic problems, and birds can warn them of such. There are very subtle changes in body chemistry when you have diabetes, and birds pick up on it.

Fish: Best pet to reduce stress.
Just staring at fish is very meditative, and for that reason, they reduce stress.
Rabbits: Best pet for fighting allergies.
When young kids are exposed to rabbits, they build a tolerance and are less likely to have allergies from that. Rabbits are really allergenic because they lick themselves all the time and get the dander off. This fact was new to me. Many years ago, my allergist warned me that the bedding used with rabbits and other small pets can cause havoc with allergies for some people.

BEIJING (AP) -- The photo was undeniably cute: a studio portrait of eight babies in identical onesies and perky white cotton hats, sporting an array of expressions from giggly to goofy, baffled to bawling.
Intended as an advertisement for the studio, the photo grabbed a different kind of attention: In a country that limits most couples to one child, many Chinese were amazed to learn that a couple had spent nearly a million yuan ($160,000) and illegally enlisted two surrogate mothers to help have the four boys and four girls.
The incident has highlighted both the use of birth surrogates, a violation of Chinese law, and how wealthy Chinese do as they please, with scant regard for the rules that constrain others. The most common reaction, though, has been simple disbelief.
"Heavens. To have one family with eight kids ... in an era of family planning where most people have just one, the contrast is just too much," said popular Chinese Central Television news anchor Bai Yansong as he introduced a 20-minute special report on the babies last weekend. "It doesn't sound like news. It sounds more like a fairy tale."
Chinese media are calling the mother "babaotai muqin," or "octomom," a reference to the American woman who gave birth to octuplets using in vitro fertilization.
Much remains uncertain about the family from Guangzhou, the capital of south China's Guangdong province. According to the Guangzhou Daily, a government newspaper, the biological mother carried two of the babies, while two surrogates gave birth to three each. After the babies were born in September and October last year, 11 nannies were hired to help take care of the children, the report said.
While some suspect a hoax, a media officer with the Guangdong Health Department said the case was real and under investigation. He declined to identify the couple, citing privacy concerns.
The story has captivated the public because it symbolizes a bold defiance of the country's strict family planning rules, said Liang Zhongtang, a demography expert at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.
"People are very interested in the policy these days and the need for changes to it," he said. "A lot of people think it should have been dropped a long time ago, or relaxed at least."
A 2001 law prohibits Chinese medical institutions and personnel from performing gestational surrogacy services, in which an embryo created from a couple is implanted into another woman who carries the baby to term.
Still, an underground market is thriving as more couples put off marriage and childbirth until later in life, only to find they are unable to conceive. The law forbids only the medical procedures, and agencies connecting couples and surrogates are easy to find online.
The Guangzhou Daily said the octomom couple resorted to in vitro fertilization and surrogates after years of failed attempts to conceive.
A manager for the Guangdong branch of the Daiyunguke surrogacy agency, Liu Jialei, said that this has been the busiest of his company's seven years in business, with more than 600 surrogates matched to families. His customers are Chinese, but the medical procedures are carried out abroad, in Southeast Asia and Japan, to circumvent the law.
Chinese media reports say many procedures are also done illegally at hospitals in China.
Many Chinese frown on surrogacy, which is often portrayed as a way for the rich to avoid going through pregnancy.
An opinion piece about the eight babies in the China Daily denounced surrogacy as something done by wealthy women unwilling to disrupt their careers or ruin their figures.
Author Cai Hong, a senior writer for the newspaper, wrote that the practice would inevitably give rise to "a breeder class" of poor women who end up "renting their wombs to wealthy people."
But Therese Hesketh, a University College London professor who has done numerous field studies in China on family planning issues, says that her impression is that Chinese who can afford surrogates tend to seek out attractive university graduates, not the underprivileged.
Chinese media say octomom and her family have gone into hiding. A Chinese Central Television investigative report could only dig up former neighbors who described seeing a pack of nannies taking the babies for strolls and to a toddler center for playtime.
A series of outtakes from the portrait session posted to a blog show the logo for the QQ Baby studio prominently displayed in the background, but staff at the shop in Guangzhou denied knowing anything about the photos.
Only the relatively well-off can afford in vitro fertilization and surrogacy or to live in a villa, as this couple reportedly did.
The rich also find it easier to flout the one-child limit, because they are better able to afford the hefty fines for doing so. Some also acquire foreign citizenship, which exempts them from the birth quotas.
On the popular Sina microblog, one user posted an article about the couple and commented: "If you have money, what does the law mean?"
All the hoopla may be boosting the surrogacy business. At Daiyun.com - an agency whose website is splashed with photos of babies nestled in flowers - a manager said all the attention made it inconvenient for any staff to speak with reporters.
"But one thing is for sure, our business is getting better and better," said the woman, who would only give her surname, Liu. "More and more people come to us for services."
