Graphics lists average tax rates paid by U.S. taxpayers:

(AP) ? Under duress two days before the pivotal South Carolina primary, Republican front-runner Mitt Romney acknowledges he has part of his millions invested in the Cayman Islands, although his aides say he never used the location as a tax haven.

Neither Romney nor his campaign are providing details, including how much he has invested there, or why, or if any of his money is invested elsewhere outside the United States.

"Gov. and Mrs. Romney's assets are managed on a blind basis. They do not control the investment of these assets," campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in an emailed response to questions Wednesday night. Romney has not personally addressed the issue, although it's likely to come up at a candidates' debate Thursday night.

Scrutiny of Romney's private-sector background couldn't come at a worse time ? just as he is riding high on back-to-back victories in Iowa's caucuses and New Hampshire's primary. He came into South Carolina with anti-Romney conservatives unwilling or unable to coalesce behind a single challenger.

Details about the personal fortune of the multimillionaire former businessman have been a nagging issue for his campaign for more than a week. On Tuesday, Romney disclosed that he pays an effective tax rate of about 15 percent, lower than what he would pay if he earned a regular paycheck like many Americans. He also called "not very much" the amount he earned in speechmaking fees, though it turned out to be $373,327.62 for 12 months in 2010 and early 2011.

Those details followed verbal miscues related to his views of work. Last week in New Hampshire, Romney told an audience he knew what it was like to worry about being "pink-slipped" and losing a job. A day later, he said, "I like being able to fire people who provide services to me" ? a comment about health insurance companies that his rivals used to paint a picture of Romney as a wealthy businessman who is out of touch with ordinary Americans.

Romney hasn't been willing to elaborate on his pledge Tuesday to release his federal tax return in April. His rivals are prodding him to do it immediately, before South Carolina's primary, a potentially decisive turn in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

At an event in Rock Hill, S.C., Romney kept away from the issue of his taxes, but he criticized Newt Gingrich and other Republicans who "jumped on that bandwagon" of criticizing free enterprise. "My goodness, I listened to Speaker Gingrich the other night talk about the enterprises I've been associated with," he said. "I'm proud of the fact that I worked in the private sector, that I've achieved success."

Romney disclosed for the first time Tuesday that, despite his wealth of hundreds of millions of dollars, he has been paying taxes in the neighborhood of 15 percent, far below the top maximum income tax rate of 35 percent, because his income "comes overwhelmingly from investments made in the past." During 2010 and the first nine months of 2011, the Romney family had at least $9.6 million in income, according to a financial disclosure form submitted in August.

Romney had been consolidating GOP support before Saturday's South Carolina primary, in which a victory could all but seal his nomination. The focus on his wealth is an unwanted distraction for him as he seeks to win votes in a state where the unemployment rate, at 9.9 percent, is among the highest in the nation, and amid rising public concern over income inequality.

President Barack Obama's campaign advisers contend voters are unlikely to back a wealthy Republican with financial-industry ties at a time of lingering economic distress.

The maximum marginal U.S. income tax rate of 35 percent applies ? in theory more than practice ? to households with taxable income of over about $388,500.

Like many wealthy people, the Romneys have been helped by changes in federal tax policy that have placed much lower tax rates on investment income ? from dividends, interest and capital gains from the sale of stocks and other assets ? than on wages and salaries, the source of income for most Americans.

Under the Bush-era tax cuts strongly supported by most Republicans, such investment income, including gains on securities held for a year or longer, is subject to a tax rate of 15 percent.

According to the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation, an average federal tax rate of 15 percent ? including both income and payroll taxes ? would apply to households with taxable incomes of from $75,000 to $100,000.

Obama and his wife paid federal taxes of just over 25 percent of their 2010 income of $1.7 million, mostly from the books he's written.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry and his wife paid roughly 24 percent of their 2010 income of $217,447.

Ohio voters want fracking halted for safety studies: poll (Reuters)

CLEVELAND (Reuters) ? Ohio voters by a wide margin want a halt to hydrofracking until more impact studies are conducted, though they believe there are economic benefits to drilling for natural gas and oil, a Quinnipiac University poll released on Thursday found.

The poll comes just weeks after Ohio ordered the shutdown of five wells around Youngstown that accept waste materials from the fracking process, after a series of earthquakes that could be related to their operation.

Seventy-two percent of voters polled said there should be a halt in hydraulic fracturing, or simply fracking, in Ohio until more was known about the impact of the process, Quinnipiac found. Fracking uses massive, high-pressure injections of water, chemicals and sand to release trapped oil and gas.

Sixty four percent of respondents supported drilling for natural gas and oil because of the potential economic benefits to Ohio, and 29 percent opposed drilling due to the possible environmental impact.

"They recognize the economic value of drilling for fossil fuels in the state, but are worried about potential environmental risks of the specific technique -- hydro-fracking," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the university's polling institute.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,610 registered Ohio voters from January 9 to January 16 for the poll, which has a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.

Youngstown has experienced 11 earthquakes since the wells started using extremely high-pressure injection to force the waste materials into permeable rock, the latest on December 31.

Scientists monitoring the seismic activity in the Youngstown area found that the last two earthquakes were near the same depth and location of a disposal well. Since the shutdown, material has been removed from the well to relieve pressure.

State officials have not yet decided whether the wells will be shutdown permanently.

Fracking is widely used in the oil and gas industry and has sparked controversy in other parts of the country including in Pennsylvania, where it is used in natural gas exploration.

Sony Releases YouTube Teaser for DotSwitch Entertainment Feature

Japanese electronic giant Sony has released a new promotional video featuring "Dot Switch" - a new form of entertainment from the company.

Though the teaser, as might be expected, does not reveal too much about the forthcoming offering from the company, it does show a Sony Ericsson handset controlling a gramophone, a television as well as a robotic arm.

While controlling a robotic arm via a handset seems to be more of a marketing gimmick with little practical use, the "new entertainment" form promised by the company could revolve around the concept of using one's handset for controlling external gadgets.

Also, it is possible that the new offering from the company will enable users to share their smartphones' content with televisions. Sony's Tablet S is already equipped with that ability.

The teaser also shows the robotic arm removing a cover from a small black coloured box. What exactly the box could be, still holds a lot of mystery though. It resembles a small TV leading some to believe it could represent a "new kind of TV" which the company hinted at last year, Tech Radar suggests.

All being said, these are just some wild guesses that the tech community is making after having a glimpse of the teaser. The company is yet to announce anything concrete in this regard.

BLAX News - The Selling Of Black Inferiority Archive: PPPP Rev Jesse Jackson - "Carding 'The Blacks' At The Voting Booth Is Like Removing Federal Troops From The South During Reconstruction Which Left Us Vulnerable To The Southern Democrats All Of Whom Ar

The Above Quote From Uber Progressive Chris Hedges Which Is Spot On?

A Preview Of My Forthcoming Post On My Growing Respect For Him

It Doesn't Matter Because It Doesn't Matter (In The End)

The rants of Professional Progressive Political Preacher Jesse Jackson have played a substantial role in the adoption of my new slogan"It doesn't matter because it doesn't matter".

This man is known to say anything when he is afforded the opportunity to advance his agenda.
In saying this on MSNBC he understood that he was in the company of friends who would not call out the ignorance of this statement.?? I am surprised that the MSNBC host did not demand that the Republicans PROVE that the carding of all VOTERS is NOT racist against Black people - the permanent 'Least Of These' coalition that is vulnerable to such requests".

I have the pictures that I took from my recent venture of bailing out my cousin that show that "the unbanked" have EQUAL photo id requirements to those of us who don't answer when someone calls out "Hey you 'Least Of These' person.? Stop!!!".??? I will download them from my camera and post them later.

A few weeks ago PPPP Rev Jackson told a group of "Occupiers" that "Jesus was an Occupier".?? This was the one time that I wished that the Christian religion enforced a standard against the misappropriation of their savior's image as do the Muslims.?

There is no means by which we can dismiss the question of "Assumed Black Inferiority" from the question of assigning the reasonable prevailing standard that someone should show a photo id in the process of transacting an item of VALUE.?? We do so with money.? We do so with our Second Amendment rights for gun ownership.?

The promotion of the 'Inferior Negro' merely the transaction of "Black Inferiority" as a means of disarming people as the claims of RACISM is pushed.

Most people can't see that this RACISM is flowing both ways in this issue.

  • We understand that the Republicans are pushing this? RACIST plan of voter suppression because they understand that "a disproportionate number of Blacks carry photo id" than do White folks.
  • I wonder why few people are questioning if Democrats who are seeking to "Maximize The Black Vote" and thus ensure their political victories are RACISTS as they understand that the "Mission Accomplished Districts" that they dominate injure the "Black Permanent Interests" BUT the "Embedded Black Fox Confidence Men" will run a protection racket by which the machine suffers no harm from failing Black people as they keep our people focused on "Racism Chasing"?
I can't force you to VALUE one point over the other.
I merely ask you to consider which of these above scenarios produces a larger population of "Negroes who's Permanent Interests are injured".

While the US Justice Department Civil Rights Division can regulate the voting administration process - they have no authority in re-mediating the "Civil Rights Violations That Are Not Called Civil Rights Violations" because the body of victims refuse to call them so, despite the common outcomes with noted "Civil Rights Violations"

  • Mission Accomplished Zones with higher rates of Black Homicides
  • Mission Accomplished Zones with schools that fail to "finish" our children
  • Mission Accomplished Zones who's economic development theories have not developed our people
  • Mission Accomplished Zones who's main agenda is "Ideological Protection" along with the protection of the leadership that has erected the scheme

Anatomy of a Fall: Modern Family's Julie Bowen Went Down Hard ??? By Accident (omg!)

If you were one of the many viewers who rewound your DVR multiple times to catch Claire Dunphy falling down over and over and over again after last week's Modern Family, you're not alone.

Homeland, Modern Family and The Artist top Golden Globes

Julie Bowen took physical comedy to new heights when her Family character slammed onto the ground after slipping on a dozen falling eggs that Luke (Nolan Gould) was using for a school project. How did Bowen make the fall so bone-crushingly realistic? "By accident," Bowen tells TVGuide.com with a laugh. "That's your basic candid-camera idiot moment."

To be fair, Bowen had prepared to slip on the eggs, but she wasn't planning on crashing all the way to the ground. "I was like, 'Guys, there's no way I'm not going to fall. I'm a klutz, I'm wearing heels, there are slippery eggs. I fell and all I thought was, 'Please don't cut!' because that's on film! They used it, so I'm thrilled."

"I wish I could say, 'I practiced and physical comedy is really important to me,'" she says with mock-seriousness. "Because I do like physical comedy, but that was just raw, unadulterated klutziness."

Check out all the Golden Globes red carpet arrivals

And because the fall was realistic, so was the injury that followed. "I couldn't admit [that I got hurt] because I knew they would freak out," she says. "My hip was purple, and I couldn't tell them. They'd make me see a doctor."

What did you think of Bowen's spill? Rewatch the thump heard 'round the world over and over again below:

Modern Family airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on ABC.

Fuel transfer runs smoothly in iced-in Alaska city (AP)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? A Russian tanker that went on an ocean odyssey of 5,000 miles to deliver fuel to the iced-in city of Nome was offloading the gasoline and diesel in what officials say is smooth sailing so far, with one possible problem avoided.

Two parallel hoses, 700 yards long each, are stretched between the tanker Renda and a pipeline that will deliver 1.3 million gallons of fuel to storage tanks near the harbor of the iced-in city. The offloading began with gasoline, and then both gasoline and diesel were being transferred separately.

Jason Evans, board chairman of Sitnasuak Native Corp., the company that arranged for the fuel delivery, said Tuesday the tanker's two hoses are pumping between 30,000 and 40,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel an hour.

One section of hose had to be switched out early Tuesday morning when a suspected bubble occurred in the line, Evans said. The change-out went smoothly and there have been no spills since the pumping operation began Monday evening.

This is the first time petroleum products have been delivered to a western Alaska community by sea in winter, officials said.

The transfer could take from 36 hours to five days. It started near sundown Monday, after crews laid the hoses along a stretch of Bering Sea ice to the pipeline that begins on a rock causeway 550 yards from the tanker, Evans said.

Sitnasuak owns the local fuel company, Bonanza Fuel, and has been working closely with Vitus Marine, the supplier that arranged for the delivery of the 1.3 million gallons of fuel.

State officials said the transfer had to start during daylight, but can continue in darkness. Nome has just five hours of daylight this time of year.

The city of 3,500 didn't get its last pre-winter barge fuel delivery because of a massive November storm. Without the Renda's delivery, Nome would run out of fuel by March or April, long before the next barge delivery is possible.

Alaska has had one of the most severe winters in decades. Snow has piled up 10 feet or higher against the wood-sided buildings in Nome, a former gold rush town that is the final stop on the 1,150-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

The Renda began its journey from Russia in mid-December, picking up diesel fuel in South Korea before heading to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, where it took on unleaded gasoline. It arrived last week off Nome on Alaska's west coast, more than 500 miles from Anchorage.

A Coast Guard icebreaker cleared a path for the 370-foot tanker through hundreds of miles of a slow journey stalled by thick ice and strong ocean currents. In total, the tanker traveled an estimated 5,000 miles, said Rear Adm. Thomas Ostebo, commander of District Seventeen with the Coast Guard.

"It's just been an absolutely grand collaboration by all parties involved," said Stacey Smith of Vitus Marine, the fuel supplier.

Smith said the effort is a third of the way over with the arrival of the Renda near Nome. Pumping the fuel from the tanker will be the second part. The third part will be the exiting through ice by the two ships.

Personnel will walk the entire length of hosing every 30 minutes to check for leaks, Evans said. Each segment has its own containment area, and extra absorbent boom will be on hand.

The Coast Guard is monitoring the effort, working with state, federal, local and tribal representatives, Chief Petty Officer Kip Wadlow said. The fuel participants had to submit a plan to state environmental regulators on how they intended to get the fuel off the Renda, he said.

"We want to make sure the fuel transfer from the Renda to the onshore storage facility is conducted in as safe a manner as possible," he said.

Ravens hope home-field advantage holds vs Texans

(AP) ? The Baltimore Ravens were perfect at home during the regular season and a .500 team on the road, which explains why they were so desperate to host at least one playoff game this month.

There are many theories as to why the Ravens are so much better at home. Familiarity with their surroundings? Check. The noise generated by their 71,000 supportive fans? Absolutely. The Sportexe synthetic turf at M&T Bank Stadium?

Say what?

According to Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak, whose team faces Baltimore on Sunday in the second round of the AFC playoffs, the Ravens will have the advantage of playing before a boisterous home crowd and on a field that's seemingly custom-made for Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice.

"First off, the noise obviously is tough. But they get even better on that turf," Kubiak said. "To me, they get even quicker coming off the edges and setting the edges and what they do, so that makes them even more difficult. I think Ray, as great a player as he is, he even gets a step better on that turf running the ball."

Kubiak speaks from experience. He watched Rice run for 101 yards in October, helping Baltimore roll to a 29-14 home win over the Texans.

But while Rice has proven to be effective at home or on the road, on grass or on artificial turf, the Ravens (12-4) are unquestionably more dominant in Baltimore. And that is one big reason why the Ravens believe this playoff run will be more successful than the three that preceded it.

Baltimore is the only NFL team to reach the playoffs in each of the last four seasons. In the previous three, however, the Ravens advanced as a wild-card and did not get to play at home. They won a game in each postseason appearance, but on every occasion the strain of repeatedly playing on the road proved too difficult to overcome.

Now, coming off a bye and playing in a venue where they went 8-0 during the regular season, the AFC North champions are confident that home-field advantage will be a big factor in their bid to defeat the Texans (11-6) and earn a berth in the conference title game.

"I don't care who you are, I don't care how good you are, it's hard to win on the road," Baltimore middle linebacker Ray Lewis said. "For us to work as hard as we did, get 12 wins, do the things we were supposed to do, and now get this home playoff game, we have positioned ourselves to be in the right place. Now we have to go finish it."

This will be the Ravens' first home playoff game since 2006 and the first for Rice, now in his fourth NFL season.

"I'd like to say, first off, it's a dream come true," Rice said. "I played every playoff game that there was since I've been a rookie, and they've all been on the road. It's very tough. Playing on the road is tough, no matter how you want to slice that. Trust me, it's a lot different than playing at home. So, a home playoff game definitely plays big on our behalf."

The Texans know the positives of playing at home after dismissing Cincinnati 31-10 last week at Reliant Stadium. On Sunday, rookie quarterback T.J. Yates must try to communicate with his offense while virtually every fan in the house is screaming 'Defense!' or something far more obscene.

"They were pretty loud when we were there earlier in the year, so one can only imagine it will be just as loud if not louder," Houston offensive coordinator Rick Dennison said. "Our guys just have to focus on the snap count. We can't have any pre-snap penalties."

For the Texans to be successful on offense, two things have to happen: They can't jump offside and need to get their running game going so Yates isn't pressed into an obvious passing situation on third down.

"The crowd really gets behind them," offensive tackle Duane Brown said. "We played them in the regular season, and I'm sure it's going to be multiplied times 10, 20 now that it's the playoffs. We just have to stay poised, communicate as much as possible and be on the same page up front. And just stay on track and stay ahead of the chains. Once you get into those third-and-long situations, that's when they can pin their ears back and really try to get after you."

Beating the Ravens on the road in the postseason is not as difficult a task as it might seem. Baltimore lost in 2006 to the Indianapolis Colts and also fell at home against Tennessee in 2004. The only time the Ravens won a home playoff game was in 2000, when they launched their run to a Super Bowl victory with a 21-3 bashing of Denver.

Winning at home is a lot easier when you've got a host of talented players on the roster.

"Whether you play at home or on the road, you want to put a good team out there that plays good football," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "That's part of it. And the other part of it is our fans. Our fans are fantastic. It's very loud. Our fans are very passionate. You don't see very many opposing colors in our stadium, ever. That's something that we appreciate as an organization and as players and coaches."

Evangelical leaders back Santorum

By Reuters

Influential evangelical Christian leaders on Saturday endorsed Rick Santorum for the Republican U.S. presidential nomination, in an attempt to strengthen him as the more conservative alternative to front-runner Mitt Romney.

At a weekend meeting at a ranch outside Houston, the group of 150 conservatives agreed on the third ballot to support the former Pennsylvania senator.

They had not been expected to reach agreement on one candidate since evangelical support was splintered among Santorum, former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Governor Rick Perry.

"What I did not think was possible appears to be possible," said Tony Perkins, leader of the Family Research Council and spokesman for the group.

Perkins described a "vigorous and passionate" discussion about who would make the best president and said eventually people made concessions to their views in order to coalesce around one candidate.

Conservatives are desperate to find a viable alternative to Romney, who won the first two nomination contests in Iowa and New Hampshire and now leads the polls in South Carolina, which holds its Republican primary on Jan. 21.

In the 2008 election, about 60 percent of the voters in South Carolina described themselves as evangelical Christians. Santorum is a Catholic and father of seven who strongly opposes abortion and gay rights.

Despite Romney's front-runner status, many conservatives mistrust him because of his record in relatively liberal Massachusetts, where he once supported abortion rights.

"Not a lot of time was spent on Mitt Romney. It was more about the positive. How to get America back on the right road. How to get America great again," Perkins said.

Perkins said the group debated and prayed over who to pick but in the end chose the person they believed had the best social conservative and economic policies and was most likely to defeat Democratic President Barack Obama in the Nov. 6 election.

Santorum's nearest rival was the twice-divorced Gingrich.

Gingrich's campaign has begun airing TV ads in South Carolina that call Romney "pro-abortion," and say that Romney - who says he now opposes the procedure - cannot be trusted to be reliably anti-abortion. In response, Romney began running a radio ad touting his anti-abortion views.

Perkins said all factors were taken into account at the Texas meeting and said that Romney's Mormon religion "wasn't even discussed."
