Syrian activists: 200 dead in government assault (AP)

BEIRUT ? In a barrage of shelling, Syrian forces killed 200 people and wounded hundreds early Saturday in Homs in an offensive that appears to be the bloodiest episode in the nearly 11-month-old uprising, activists said.

The offensive was reported in Homs, which has been one of the main flashpoints of opposition to the regime during the uprising against President Bashar Assad.

Two main opposition groups, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees, said the death toll was more than 200 people. More than half of the killings ? about 140 ? were reported in the Khaldiyeh neighborhood.

"This is the worst attack of the uprising, since the uprising began in March until now," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the head of the Observatory, which tracks violence through contacts on the ground.

The reports could not be independently confirmed.

It was not immediately clear what precipitated the attack, but there have been reports that army defectors set up checkpoints in the area and were trying to consolidate control.

Assad is trying to crush the revolt with a sweeping crackdown that has so far claimed thousands of lives, but neither the government nor the protesters are backing down and clashes between the military and an increasingly bold and armed opposition has meant many parts of the country have seen relentless violence.

The U.N. Security Council meeting later Saturday was to take up a much-negotiated resolution on Syria. A diplomat for a Western nation that sits on the council said the meeting would happen Saturday morning. The diplomat spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to be quoted by the press.

The move toward a vote came after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke by telephone with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in an effort to overcome Russian opposition to any statement that explicitly calls for regime change or a military intervention in Syria.

The U.S. and its partners have ruled out military action but want the global body to endorse an Arab League plan that calls on Assad to hand power over to Syria's vice president.

Clinton called Lavrov while flying Friday to Munich for a security conference that both are attending, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

He said Clinton and Lavrov agreed to have American and Russian diplomats continue work on a Syria resolution and were planning to meet for more talks in the German city over the weekend.

Russia's deputy foreign minister, Gennady Gatilov, said Friday that Moscow could not support the resolution in its current form. But he expressed optimism that an agreement could be reached, according to state news agency RIA Novosti.

Assad's regime has been intensifying an assault against army defectors and protesters. The U.N. said weeks ago that more than 5,400 people have been killed in violence since March. Hundreds more have been killed since that tally was announced.

Exciting "Chronicle" could have skipped the gimmicks (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES, Feb 2 (TheWrap.com) ? The heart sinks a bit with the opening shot of "Chronicle": a teenager sets up a video camera in front of the mirror and begins narrating the movie, much of which will be seen from his point of view through the lens of his own camera.

After the bait-and-switch of the awful "The Devil Inside" and countless other knock-offs of "The Blair Witch Project" and "Cloverfield," it's hard not to lose hope when a film begins with a lens cap coming off and someone saying, "Are we rolling?"

And that's a shame, because "Chronicle" is a fresh, thrilling teen sci-fi and action movie that deserves better than to be lumped in with the irritating found-footage/mockumentary genre.

Had 26-year-old screenwriter Max Landis trusted his story enough to abandon the tired "we're seeing everything through the video camera being lugged around by the characters" shtick, the results would have been much more exciting. But even saddled with this overdone gimmick, "Chronicle" gives us some novel twists on a somewhat familiar premise.

Andrew (Dane DeHaan), the kid with the camera, is a shy, nerdy outsider, plagued by day by high school bullies and tormented at night by his drunken father (Michael Kelly) and the knowledge that his ailing mother (Ashley Hinshaw) isn't getting any better. Andrew's cousin Matt (Alex Russell) tries to get him out of his shell by taking him to a party, where it becomes clear that Andrew is not going to be putting down that damn camera, no matter what the situation.

Matt and popular jock Steve (Michael B. Jordan) get Andrew to follow them out into the woods to document a strange hole that they've found. And when Steve and Matt insist on climbing down into it, Andrew has no choice but to follow them into a strange chamber that appears to host some sort of alien life forms and energy source.

In true comic-book origin story fashion, the three teens suddenly find that they can manipulate objects with their minds. (Including the ubiquitous camera, so at least we don't get the usual "hand-held" shake.) And once they figure out how to lift their own bodies off the ground, they go soaring in the clouds, in a breathtaking sequence. Unlike comic-book characters, however, they don't suddenly become crime-fighters. Being teenage boys, they'd rather lift up girls' skirts (an homage to '80s comedy "Zapped!" perhaps?), play pranks on unsuspecting bystanders, do "magic" tricks and get revenge on their enemies.

Actually, it's Andrew who's doing the latter, and as the story proceeds, it's clear that this mentally fragile young man isn't ready for the incredible powers he's been given, so it's up to his two friends to stop him when his moral compass goes spinning out of control.

Landis treats his teen characters like actual high-schoolers, and he's very smart about making situations feel true-to-life even when aliens and telekinetic powers enter the picture.

And though the whole first-person business seems like a mistake, the screenplay definitely commits to the concept, using everything from a pretty young video-blogger to iPads and surveillance cameras to capture the action. ("Chronicle" makes the none-too-subtle point that, these days, you're never far from someone with a camera.)

First-time director Josh Trank, who will celebrate his 27th birthday later this month, deftly juggles the emotional moments with the scenes where teens exuberantly discover their amazing new powers. (The special effects, incidentally, are top-notch as well.) The film's world-view goes from intimate at the beginning to a climatic event sprawled out over a bigger canvas, but Trank never loses track of the proceedings.

There are many exhilarating moments and ideas in "Chronicle" that make it a very good movie; if the filmmakers had ditched the unnecessary framing device of the characters filming themselves, it might have been a great one.

White House: Iran sanctions not aimed at oil markets (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The White House said on Thursday the Iran sanctions proposed by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama should be enforced in a way that does not hurt the United States' allies or disrupt oil markets.

"We want to make sure that the implementation of those sanctions is handled in a way that does not inadvertently do any harm to our allies or to the oil markets," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.

"We believe there is a way to implement them appropriately that achieves the goal that those sanctions have, which is to further isolate and pressure Iran," Carney said.

Eye contact helps detect autism - weight loss, diet, health, wellness ...

Shweta Arya was 29 years old when she first had a back problem. Ignored initially, her pain spread upwards and aggravated to a level where she was not even able to move her neck.

"Employed with an infrastructure consultancy, I used to work on a laptop with a bent neck. The back pain went on increasing and finally my situation was so bad that I could not even move my neck," she said.

Arya is one of the many young people suffering from spondylitis (a form of arthritis that affects your spine), a disease which is affecting more and more people in the lower age bracket.

"My doctor told me that while working on a laptop, the back should be straight and eyes should be on the same level as the computer screen. He said this problem developed due to my bad posture," said Arya.

Long working hours on the computer, a desk job and lack of physical activities are a grim reality today, and so are increasing back problems and spondylitis. Doctors say a sharp increase has been noted in the number of young patients falling prey to spondylitis.

"Over the years the number of patients suffering from arthritis, especially spondylitis, has been increasing," said doctor S.K.S. Marya, an orthopaedic surgeon at Max Hospital in south Delhi's Saket.

According to the orthopaedic department of Max Hospital, at least 20 fresh cases of spondylitis are reported every week where patients are below 30 years of age. If compared with the numbers a decade ago, the increase is almost three-fold. Spondylitis is a chronic inflammation of the spine and joints in the lower back, causing stiffness and pain.

"A sedentary lifestyle leads to joint and muscle deformities. Spondylitis has become very common among people as young as 25 years who sit in front of computer screens for a long duration. It has all happened since the MNCs and call centres have come in," said Marya.

Doctor G.P. Dureja, director of Delhi Pain Management Centre, said after osteoarthritis of the knee (that occurs in people older than 40 years), spondylitis is the most common form of arthritis among Indians.

"Lack of exercise, bad posture while working in office, sitting with a bent back while watching TV and obesity - all are reasons for an increasing number of spondylitis cases," Dureja said.

Among Indians, osteoarthritis of the knee is the most common. It is the degeneration of joints which occurs gradually in people older than 40 years. Spondylitis is the next stage. These could happen to anyone who doesn't have a healthy lifestyle, irrespective of his or her age.

"People in India do not have a culture of exercise. Even on holidays they prefer sitting at home rather than going out and enjoying the sun," said doctor Partap Chauhan, director, Jiva Ayurveda.

The lack of nutrition is also a factor responsible for these ailments. "Working people don't care about their diet. They take in junk food which is rich only in carbohydrates. Their nutrition levels are low, which make their body weak and less immune and thereby more vulnerable to arthritis," said Chauhan.

Orthopaedics suggest that regular exercise with a healthy but light diet were two simple ways of avoiding arthritis or at least delaying its occurrence.

Arya too has discovered the secret of exercise. "Now, I do a little bit of regular exercise, about 5-10 minutes in the morning and evening. That is enough to control my spondylitis," she said.

"A regular brisk walk for 10 minutes, stretching muscles once in a while at the work place, eating a calcium- and protein-rich diet is all that one has to do to keep any form of arthritis at bay," said Dureja.

FRC Blog ? A Wise Verdict for One Man, One Woman Marriage

Legislation to change the definition of marriage ? abolishing the ?one man, one woman? definition codified only 14 years ago ? is now working its way through the Washington State Legislature.

There is little doubt that the legislature has the power to engage in such social engineering if it chooses to do so. Such official affirmation of homosexual conduct would be a way for politicians to appease the two to three percent of the population who self-identify as ?gay? or ?lesbian? and placate others who do not grasp the implications of this massive social change.

But same-sex ?marriage? is not being sold as a political payoff, or even (primarily) as a social service providing a package of legal and financial benefits to this population. Instead, advocates of redefining marriage argue that a belief in ?civil rights? and ?equality? actually compel such a radical redefinition of our most fundamental social institution.

Yet it was only six years ago that the state?s Supreme Court, in the case of Andersen v. King County, rejected such arguments in upholding the 1998 Defense of Marriage Act.

Justice (now Chief Justice) Barbara Madsen pointed out in her majority opinion that while the U. S. Supreme Court has declared marriage to be a ?fundamental right,? it has done so only in the context of marriages between a man and a woman, since they relate to ?procreation and the survival of the human race.?

In his concurrence, Justice James M. Johnson noted that the only ?inequality? in the current law is between different types of couples, not individuals. ?Professed homosexuals, like all Washingtonians, are clearly allowed to marry in Washington.? Yet all individuals also face limits on their choice of marriage partner: ?A person may not marry someone under age 17, may not marry if already married, may not marry a close relative, and may not marry if ?the parties are persons other than a male and a female.? The last prohibition, like the bigamy/polygamy prohibition, is definitional.?

There is no question that opposite-sex couples are unique; as Justice Madsen noted, ?[N]o other relationship has the potential to create, without third party involvement, a child biologically related to both parents.? The link between marriage and procreation ?is not defeated by the fact that the law allows opposite-sex marriage regardless of a couple?s willingness or ability to procreate,? nor by the fact that some same-sex couples raise children; ?Such over- or under-inclusiveness does not defeat finding a rational basis? for treating opposite-sex couples uniquely.

Marriage serves not only to encourage the potentially procreative relationships of opposite-sex couples, but also to regulate them. Justice Madsen quoted a 2005 Indiana court decision which noted that procreation is sometimes accidental: ?[The] institution of opposite-sex marriage both encourages such couples to enter into a stable relationship before having children and to remain in such a relationship if children arrive during the marriage unexpectedly.?

Not only are opposite-sex couples the only ones capable of natural procreation, but they also provide the best environment for child-rearing. As Justice Johnson wrote: ?The legislature was offered evidence that children tend to thrive best in families consisting of mothers, fathers, and their biological children. ? Direct comparisons between opposite-sex homes and same-sex homes further support the former as a better environment for children. For example, studies show an average shorter term commitment and more sexual partners for same-sex couples.?

Advocates of same-sex ?marriage? regularly confuse one of the personal reasons why individual couples choose to marry ? to express love and commitment ? with the public purposes of marriage as a social institution. Justice Madsen was blunt in noting that ?the right to marry is not grounded in the State?s interest in promoting loving, committed relationships. While desirable, nowhere in any marriage statute of this state has the legislature expressed this goal.?

Some people argue that other changes in the institution of marriage, as well as technologies which have separated sexual relations from procreation, mean that the historic definition of marriage can be abandoned. But as Justice Johnson noted, quoting a brief submitted by Families Northwest, ?[W]idespread contraceptive and abortion rights may actually make more salient, not less, the traditional role of marriage in encouraging men and women to make the next generation that society needs. The more ? choice individuals have about whether or not to have children, the more need there is for a social institution that encourages men and women to have babies together, and creates the conditions under which those children are likely to get the best care.?

In 2006, Justice Madsen said for the court, ?We conclude that limiting marriage to opposite sex-couples furthers the State?s interests in procreation and encouraging families with a mother and father and children biologically related to both.?

The legislature would be wise to conclude the same today.

Trials and Errors: Why Science Is Failing Us

Anyone see the massive irony in this being posted on the internet, run by computers, powered by electricity, declaring that science is "failing us?"

First example in the story: a drug that doctors thought was going to work... didn't... The scientists mixed up what was causing what.

They had a hypothesis and tested it. We can say that the hypothesis was wrong because of what? That's right, because of science.

To imply that science is failing, or we need to reconceptualize "causality," simply because it's difficult... that's idiotic.

Finally, this article falls into a common mistake with science writing: confusing clinical trials with ALL SCIENCE RESEARCH. I do basic biological research. Don't lump me in with clinical researchers, critique their methods, and then say that all science research is messed up.

Officials: Romney to get Secret Service protection (AP)

TAMPA, Fla. ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is getting Secret Service protection, according to two people with knowledge of the plans.

A Romney campaign adviser said the Secret Service will provide security for the former Massachusetts governor starting late Wednesday.

Romney's campaign requested the protection, an administration official said. The official said the administration determined that Romney met all the conditions for protection. Those include being a major presidential candidate who has raised a certain amount of money.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive security matters.

With a win in Florida on Tuesday, Romney is closer to becoming the Republican nominee. His events have grown larger and his campaign team has had more trouble handling security as interest in the race has increased.

The campaign had previously paid former Secret Service agents to protect Romney. Two to three former agents would protect Romney at each event. Secret Service protection is given to each major party's presidential nominee but can be provided earlier if the Homeland Security Department approves a campaign's request.

ABC News first reported that Romney would start receiving Secret Service protection.

When then-Sen. Barack Obama was placed under Secret Service protection in May 2007, it was the earliest ever for a presidential candidate. One of his rivals, Hillary Rodham Clinton, already had a protective detail because she was a former first lady.

One of Romney's rivals, businessman Herman Cain, received Secret Service protection in November 2011. He dropped out of the race in December.

In the 2004 campaign, Democratic candidates John Kerry and John Edwards received protection in February of that year as they competed for the party's nomination.

Federal law allows candidates to seek protection if they meet a series of standards, including public prominence as measured by polls and fundraising.

Plan would help military families take leave (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration proposed new rules Monday to help military families care for service members when they are injured or called to active duty on short notice.

The proposal expands eligibility under the Family and Medical Leave Act, which allows employees to take unpaid leave for certain medical or family emergencies.

First lady Michelle Obama joined Labor Secretary Hilda Solis to announce the plan, which would let caregivers take leave to help family members up to five years after they leave the military. Current law does not cover service members who have left the armed forces.

"We want to recognize the extraordinary dedication, sacrifice and service of our nation's caregivers, not simply with words but with deeds," Obama said during a Labor Department ceremony attended by dozens of military members and their families.

The rules also would expand leave to cover families of those in the regular armed forces, not just families of National Guard members and reservists.

The proposal would allow spouses, children or parents take up to 12 weeks of leave from work to help a service member deployed on short notice. Family caregivers could attend military functions, deal with child care issues, or make financial and legal arrangements without fear of losing their jobs.

"Many service members come home stressed, ill and injured," Solis said. "They need attention, care and support from the people that love them most."

Family members also would get up to 26 weeks of leave to care for recent veterans who were injured or became ill in the line of duty. That includes conditions that don't arise until after a veteran has left military service.

The plan expands from five days to 15 days the amount of time an employee can take off work to spend with a service member who is on leave to rest or recuperate.

Labor officials will consider comments for the next 60 days before considering whether to make the proposed rules final.
