SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The daughter of one of the world's most sought-after drug lords didn't share information that might lead to her father's capture after she was detained on an immigration violation, a U.S. official said Tuesday.

Alejandrina Gisselle Guzman Salazar, 31, was charged Monday with fraud and misuse of visas, three days after authorities arrested her at San Diego's San Ysidro port of entry, the nation's busiest border crossing.

The official said Guzman Salazar has been "a dead end" in the search for Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the elusive leader of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an investigation that has not been made public.

Border inspectors interviewed Guzman Salazar for about a half-hour, during which time she volunteered that Guzman was her father and that she was six months pregnant, the official said. She didn't say why she offered the information but the official speculated that she may have bet been betting authorities would be reluctant to bear the additional costs of holding someone with special medical needs.

Guzman Salazar's mother is Maria Alejandrina Hernandez Salazar, the official said. The U.S. Treasury Department described Hernandez Salazar as Joaquin Guzman's wife when it imposed financial sanctions on her in June.

The complaint said Guzman Salazar attempted to enter the country on foot Friday, impersonating someone with a non-immigrant visa contained in a Mexican passport. It said a fingerprint scan indicated she is in a U.S. government database of previous immigration violators but was not more specific.

Guzman Salazar told authorities intended to go to Los Angeles to give birth to her child, according to the complaint.

A typical sentence for such a violation is two to six months in custody, Guadalupe Valencia, one of her attorneys, said Tuesday. He said his client is a medical doctor from Guadalajara and is seven months pregnant.

Guzman Salazar hired Valencia and Jan Ronis, attorneys with histories of representing clients accused of links to organized crime. A bail hearing is scheduled Oct. 25.

The Sinaloa cartel, named after the Pacific coast state of the same name, controls trafficking along much of the U.S. border with Mexico, particularly in Western states.

Authorities in the U.S. and Mexico have said they believe Guzman has children with several partners, though it's not clear how many. The U.S. Treasury Department has put sanctions on sons Ivan Archivaldo "El Chapito" Guzman Salazar, 31, and Ovidio Guzman Lopez, 22.

Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar, 26, was indicted with his father on multiple drug trafficking charges in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in August 2009.

Last month, the U.S. Treasury Department said it was placing financial sanctions on Guzman's wife, Griselda Lopez Perez. The department said at the time that she "plays a key role" in the Sinaloa cartel.

Lopez Perez was the second wife of Guzman designated under the U.S. Kingpin Act, which bars U.S. citizens from making business transactions with that person and allows authorities to freeze their assets in the United States.

The Los Angeles Times reported last year that Guzman's wife ? former beauty queen Emma Coronel ? traveled to Southern California and gave birth to twin girls at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, north of Los Angeles. The newspaper said Coronel, then 22, holds U.S. citizenship, which entitles her to travel freely to the U.S. and to use its hospitals.

Commonsense medical precautions ignored

New York, NY (October 15, 2012) Screening practices for multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in intensive care units (ICUs) vary widely from hospital to hospital, according to a new study by researchers at Columbia University School of Nursing and published in the October 2012 issue of the American Journal of Infection Control.

Researchers found that of the hospitals surveyed, a little more than half (59 percent) routinely screened for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aurea, or MRSA. Other potentially deadly MDROs were screened for far less frequently: vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (22 percent), gram-negative rods (12 percent), and C. difficile (11 percent).

The survey showed that not all hospitals follow a comprehensive screening and surveillance policy for infectious disease in the ICU, including the isolation of at-risk patients both during and after laboratory tests for infection. For example, although almost all of the ICUs (98 percent) reported a policy for contact precautions following a positive culture, less than a third reported a policy requiring isolation/contact precautions pending screening results.

While lead author Monika Pogorzelska-Maziarz, PhD, MPH, advocates hospitals tailoring their response to the types and frequency of infection in their local areas, she thinks that some measures included in her study make good sense from a precaution perspective. "It seems prudent to isolate possibly infected patients admitted into the ICU until lab tests come back giving an 'all clear,'" she says.

The researchers found that a larger infection-control staff and longer infection-control staffing hours were associated with better implementation of policy to isolate culture-positive patients. They also found that ICUs with mandatory reporting and electronic surveillance systems were more likely to have a policy of periodic screening for infection after admission.

Too much helpful algae can be bad for corals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? A new study by scientists at the University of Miami (UM) Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science shows that corals may be more severely impacted by climate warming when they contain too many symbiotic algae. The single-celled algae living inside corals are usually the key to coral success, providing the energy needed to build massive reef frameworks. However, when temperatures become too warm, these algae are expelled from corals during episodes of coral 'bleaching' that can lead to widespread death of corals. Until now, it was thought that corals with more algal symbionts would be more tolerant of bleaching because they had 'more symbionts to lose.' The new study shows that the opposite is true.

"We discovered that the more symbiotic algae a coral has, the more severely it bleaches, showing that too much of a good thing can actually be bad," said Ross Cunning, Ph.D. student and lead author of the study. "We also learned that the number of algae in corals varies over time, which helps us better understand coral bleaching risk."

His research was conducted using cauliflower coral (Pocillopora damicornis) collected from the Pacific coast of Panama. The corals were monitored for six months at the UM's Experimental Hatchery, where they slowly warmed up and ultimately bleached. The number of symbiotic algae in the corals was studied by analyzing DNA samples with new highly sensitive genetic techniques that determine the ratio of algal cells to coral cells. This improved technique made the discovery possible by showing that corals with more algae bleached more severely than those with fewer algae.

"Corals regulate their symbionts to match the environment in which they are found, and this study shows there is a real cost to having too many," said co-author Andrew Baker, associate professor at UM's Rosenstiel School. "There are real-world implications of this. Corals will be more vulnerable to bleaching if they are found in environments which increase the number of symbionts, such as coastal reefs polluted by wastewater and runoff. If we can improve water quality, we might be able to buy some time to help these reefs avoid the worst effects of climate change.

"Other environmental changes, including ocean acidification as a result of increasing carbon dioxide emissions, might also influence bleaching vulnerability in ways we haven't thought of before," Baker added.

Alabama, Florida top initial BCS standings

The defending champion Crimson Tide are No. 1 in both polls used in the BCS formula.

Shane Keyser/Kansas City Star/MCT via Getty Images

By The Associated Press

Alabama and Florida are at the top of the season's first BCS standings, making it yet another all-SEC top two, with Oregon and Kansas State close behind the Gators.

? Complete BCS standings

The Crimson Tide in first was no surprise. Alabama is an overwhelming No. 1 in both polls used in the BCS formula. Florida in second was less anticipated. The Gators are No. 3 in the polls, but rated best by the computer rankings That gave them a slight edge over Oregon and Kansas State when the numbers were crunched. Florida's BCS average is .9092. Oregon's is .8993 and Kansas State's is .8963.

Notre Dame is fifth and not too far back at .8774.

Despite the strong showing by the Southeastern Conference, another all-SEC national championship game is still a long shot. Oregon's schedule is backloaded with strong opponents and the Ducks will likely be able to close the gap in the computers if they keep winning.

The Ducks play Arizona State on Thursday (5-1) and still have games against Southern California and Oregon State left, and a possible Pac-12 title game.

Florida has some tough games left, too, starting Saturday against South Carolina.

With half the season still to play, there are plenty possibilities and teams still alive.

Teams with one loss, such as sixth-place LSU, seventh-place South Carolina, ninth-place Oklahoma and 10th-place USC are still very much in the race as long as they keep winning.

Oregon State is in eighth, the lowest rated of the unbeaten teams.

This is safe to say: If Alabama keeps winning, the Tide will play for its second straight national title, and third in four seasons.

Alabama has never before been first in the initial standings. Seven times since the Bowl Championship Series was implemented in 1998, the team that was first in the initial standings went on to play in the BCS title game.

Seven times the team that started second played for the BCS title. And only twice has neither of the teams that were in the top two spots in the first standings reached the title game.

UAkron political science professor receives grant to study link between Pakistani media use and beliefs on violence

Akron, Ohio, Oct. 15, 2012 To what extent does media use among Pakistanis affect beliefs on Islamist violence? University of Akron political science professor Karl Kaltenthaler is the principal investigator on a research project that will attempt to answer this question and more.

The 20-month, $276,000 grant, funded by the U.S. Department of State, will provide insight into the relationship between media consumption in Pakistan and beliefs about the legitimacy of Islamist violence. Kaltenthaler and his team will conduct a national survey of 6,000 Pakistanis for the project, "Pakistani Media and Muslim Communities: Identifying and Supporting Critical Thinking."

"The research into Pakistani attitudes toward violence and extremism is a priority for the community that studies terrorism and threats to the United States because Pakistan has been such an incubator and haven for terrorist groups with anti-American agendas," says Kaltenthaler. "It is crucial to understand what factors influence the Pakistani public's attitudes toward such groups and the violence they commit because the public can determine what the Pakistani government does to curb such groups and the public also serves as a potential source of logistical support and recruits for the extremist groups."

Kaltenthaler expects to announce the results of the study in September 2014.

Jackson football notebook: Manchester QB Ryan Stiles delivers big game despite hand injury

, October 15, 2012 3:44 p.m.

Manchester coach Wes Gall gives the play to quarterback Ryan Stiles at Manchester High School on Friday night. Manchester won the game, 21-12, against Michigan Center. - (J. Scott Park | MLive.com)

As a team prepares for a game where a conference championship hangs in the balance, about the last thing it wants is for its quarterback?s availability to be uncertain. But Manchester found itself in just that position heading into last week?s showdown with then-undefeated Michigan Center.

Manchester junior quarterback Ryan Stiles injured his hand in practice. And though coach Wes Gall said they weren?t sure when or how the injury happened, by the following day, its effects were apparent.

?His whole hand was black and blue. We didn?t know on Wednesday (if Stiles would play Friday),? Gall said.

Not only did Stiles suit up, he was effective. He completed 8 of 15 passes for 123 yards as Manchester upset Michigan Center 21-12.

In the first quarter he threw a beautiful pass to Nick Cozart down the Manchester sideline for a 48-yard gain that set up the Dutchmen?s first touchdown of the night.

?(Wednesday) he could only throw the ball 10 yards,? Gall said. ?The next day he could throw 20 yards. Today was the 30-yard day.?

Stiles? play helped Manchester win a share of the Cascades Championship with Michigan Center and Grass Lake, and also clinched the team?s fifth consecutive trip to the playoffs.

?We knew we had to get this one to get a solid, guaranteed playoff berth, that was huge,? Stiles said. ?Plus a three-way tie for the conference doesn?t hurt.?

-- By Rich McGowan

?

Conklin airs it out for Western

Parma Western junior quarterback Ryan Conklin continued to show a fine passing arm Friday in the Panthers? 32-10 victory over rival Northwest. Conklin completed 17 of 25 passes for 211 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Western?s first victory of the season.

?As our line has developed and gotten better with protection, Ryan had more time,? Western coach Al Ennis said. ?We?ve been able to break down more of what we want him to look at. He?s just doing a better job of making his reads and selecting the open receivers.?

Conklin threw all three of his touchdown passes in the first half as Western built a 19-10 lead at intermission. In the first half, Conklin was 12-for-17 for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

?I feel so much more comfortable,? Conklin said. ?I played last year on varsity, but this year I started off a little rough. I?ve gotten better and better every week, and I?m just looking forward to (this) week.

?If we can keep rolling and get a big win (this) week, we?re just going to get big wins next year, too. It?s going to be great.?

Western (1-7) finishes its season on the road Friday at Buchanan, which is 6-2 and headed for the postseason.

No rest for Grass Lake

Though his team has clinched a playoff berth, has a 7-1 overall record and won a share of the Cascades Conference championship, Grass Lake football coach Randy Cole knows it can?t relax this week.

Not with a trip to visit undefeated Leslie looming.

Last Friday, the Warriors flexed their muscle in a 42-6 win over Hanover-Horton in an impressive all-around showing. The Grass Lake defense was stout while the offense put up all six touchdowns in the first half.

But Cole understands Leslie will be no pushover in the last game of the regular season. The Warriors knocked off the Blackhawks twice last season, once in the regular season finale and again in the district championship.

?We play a great Leslie team next week, so we gotta get ready ? they?re a super football team,? Cole said.

Titans take to the air

Given the success Jackson Lumen Christi has enjoyed this season running the football, it can be easy to forget the Titans can get it done through the air as well.

Just ask Eaton Rapids.

Lumen Christi quarterback Justin O?Dowd completed just four passes but three went for touchdowns of 40, 25 and 7 yards. O?Dowd finished with 82 yards throwing, and his favorite target was Austin Childs, who caught all three of O?Dowd?s touchdowns for 72 yards.

Website Marketing Tips You Should Try Out! | Eric Chua : Life ...

Internet marketing is essential when developing your business. This is the only way to be successful. A good Web marketing campaign could be the key to the success of your business. Here are some great ways to ensure that your Internet promotion strategy is a success.

Show proof that your product works on your website. Just because you claim that your Italian language course works doesn?t do anything to make your customers believe you. However, if you include a video of someone using your course to speak Italian you will gain credibility. This greatly illustrates why you should be selling products you?ve used.

Most product and service communications can benefit by the use of descriptive terms and phrases that will deliver gratification instantly or near-instant. Emphasize speed, whether it is speed of order placement, speed of order shipment or the speed at which results can be expected when your service or product is used. Useful phrases are ?speedy downloads?, ?quick confirmations?, and ?secure checkout?.

TIP! Earning and maintaining your clients? trust is crucial. Only use facts when creating marketing plans and selling products to customers.

You may even bundle the excess inventory with another similar product and sell the two for a discount. Advertisements for sales or promotions must be detailed and contain the exact conditions of the offer.

Advertise limited-edition products. People buy things over the internet because they want something new and different. These shoppers crave new and unique products. Try selling something that is only out for a short period of time. People will think that it is special and buy it quickly.

If you are using email marketing, you need to rotate links that are included in your correspondence. The link blocks that stay the same in each email are generally ignored. Even something a little bit different in your emails will make your recipient want to read it.

TIP! While you may become frustrated, giving up on your internet marketing dreams is a sure way to fail. It is possible that you are closer than you think you are to success.

Make sure to include free samples and coupons with shipping boxes that will relate to whatever product your customer will be receiving in the mail. This gives your customers a good reason to return, and also shows that you appreciate their business.

Great content is the basis of a strong, effective Affiliate marketing strategy. Make sure to review the content on your site regularly to make sure that you?re delivering the right message to your audience. Let others look at and critique your content as well. You may find it very useful to have others? outlook. Last of all, you must ensure that you do a spell check and a grammar check of your content in order to catch and correct any errors.

Do not give up right away if you are not successful. What did not work at one time, may well work in the future. The Internet is always changing, and people find new uses for things all the time. Put ideas not currently working on the back burner, and come back to them when they become relevant.

TIP! Make a plan for how you will market your webpage and the strategies you will use. You can use social networking, blog posts and even posters in area businesses to help advertise your site for little or no cost.

Website marketing today is definitely something that is a must for any business. If you are conducting business online, it?s something you can?t ignore. Use the tips in this article to be sure that you are using internet promotion properly so as to increase the success of your business
