First step taken to image ultra-fast movements in chemical reactions

ScienceDaily (Mar. 16, 2012) ? A team of international researchers have fired ultra-fast shots of light at oxygen, nitrogen and carbon monoxide molecules as part of a development aimed at mapping the astonishingly quick movements of atoms within molecules, as well as the charges that surround them.

The ultra-short laser that spans only a few hundred attoseconds -- an attosecond is equivalent to one quintillionth of a second -- was fired in a sample of molecules and could pave the way towards imaging the movement of atoms and their electrons as they undergo a chemical reaction -- one of the holy grails of chemistry research.

This latest study has been published today, 16 March, as part of a special issue on attosecond science, in IOP Publishing's Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics to mark the 10th anniversary of the first ever attosecond laser pulse.

Previous research has been able to probe the structure of molecules using a variety of techniques; however, the inherent challenge is to perform these experiments in systems where changes are rapidly occurring on very small time scales.

The researchers used two lasers in their experiments: the first held the molecule in place whilst the second was fired at it. The second laser operated in the extreme ultra-violet region of the electromagnetic spectrum as this is one of only two regions -- x-ray being the other -- where the laws of physics allow laser pulses to be produced on an attosecond timescale.

Once the target molecule was in place, short pulses of the laser were fired at in an attempt to dislodge an electron. This process, known as photoionization, allows atoms and molecules to be imaged in unprecedented detail as the ejected electrons carry crucial information about where it came from.

In this experiment, the samples, which existed as a gas, were stable, meaning no reactions were taking place; however, the major goal of the research team is to monitor the electrical and molecular changes, in real-time, that occur as atoms undergo a chemical reaction.

They intend to do this by triggering a reaction with the laser, breaking a chemical bond that holds molecules together, and then using the described technique to image the changes that occur in the molecule as they happen.

Lead author of the study Dr Arnaud Rouz?e from the Max-Born-Institute said: "We show that the photoelectron spectra recorded for a small molecule, such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon monoxide contains a wealth of information about electron orbitals and the underlying molecular structure.

"This is a proof-of-principle experiment that electrons ejected within the molecule can be used to monitor ultrafast electronic and atomic motion."

Samsung shareholders approve spin-off of LCD business

It's been less than a month since Samsung confirmed that it would be spinning-off its LCD business into a separate company, and it looks like things are proceeding along speedily. The company's shareholders have now approved the spin-off, paving the way for the tentatively-titled Samsung Display Co. to come into existence on April 1st. Samsung Electronics will have a 100 percent stake in that company, and the current executive vice president of its LCD business, Park Dong-gun, will take on the position of president in the new firm. All of that, Samsung says, is being done in an effort to make the company more nimble and able to respond to its clients' needs more quickly.

How to Make Direct Marketing Work for Your Business |

With the marketing industry focusing on online promotion, it can be easy to ignore the potential business that offline marketing can bring. Although traditionally offline marketing is more expensive than online promotion, if you focus on specific campaigns for a clearly defined target audience then you can ensure your investment is well spent.

Direct mail can be used as a way to contact clients you?re not currently reaching online or to backup your online marketing efforts. The key is to see your direct mail as a?campaign?and encourage your recipients to go online to a specific webpage or social media channel; ask them to call a dedicated phone number or call them yourself a few days after your campaign has reached them.

As direct mail can be expensive, it?s vital to take a considered approach to anything you send out.

Below are a few questions to ask yourself before you begin a campaign.

Why are you sending a direct mail campaign?

If you want to avoid wasting money then your reason for doing a direct mail campaign needs to be crystal clear.

It?s not enough to base a campaign around ?increasing your client base? or ?making more money?; you will need to be much more specific than that. Ask yourself what the main purpose of the campaign is ? is it to drive typically offline clients to your website? Is it to promote a new product? Is it to showcase a service your recipients might not be familiar with?

Who are you sending it to?

Unless you have a bulging marketing budget you will have to refine who you send your direct mail to, at the very least by geographical area and industry sector.

Again, being as specific as possible will reap the most rewards. Will you send your direct mail to angel investors based in London? Female business owners in New York?

Small businesses with less than five employees in your local area?Every decision you make at this point will help you to define the most appropriate concept for your entire campaign and will have a direct impact on your ROI.

What is your budget?

If you have refined your send-list with the above questions then you should have a manageable number of businesses you want to make contact with. The main reason direct mail is expensive is because of postal costs, so factor this cost in alongside your design and printing. Printers often offer discounts for bulk buying but don?t be lured in by a cheap deal if it means you?ll have 5,000 postcards you can?t afford to send out, for example. It?s best to start out small with direct mail and test out a couple of sample groups of around 200 prospective clients before launching a campaign which will take you into the thousands. If you break your campaign up and test small samples then it?s easier to have control over your project and see what works and what doesn?t as you go, rather than blowing your whole budget on one concept or target market.

What your direct marketing should do

Demand attention

Your letter or postcard will be one of many landing in your prospective clients? in-trays so it?s vital that yours stands out. Again, knowing who your target market is will ensure your marketing strikes a chord with them. Successful direct marketing campaigns work because they completely understand the needs of the recipient and clearly show how a product or service can meet these needs. The better you understand your target audience, the more you will understand how they think and feel and the easier it will be to target your campaign.

Rightmove, the UK?s leading property portal, received a 20% signup rate for theirdirect mail campaign?because they fully understood who their target market was.

Rightmove?s direct marketing was sent to estate agents in London and illustrated how much market power Rightmove has in specific London postcodes, to encourage the estate agents operating in these areas to advertise with them. The campaign worked as it was so highly targeted and used clear statistics which the target market couldn?t ignore.

In another example, creative agency Targetbase Claydon Heeley sent their?direct mail campaign?to just 117 decision makers after completing some painstaking research. The company identified four industries: retail, automotive, fundraising and financial services and selected the companies which they believed offered a good fit. From researching the companies? culture, size and budgets to checking that the decision makers would be in the office when the direct mail arrived, Targetbase Claydon Heeley took their targeted campaign to the extreme. This approach worked though, as they enjoyed a response rate of 19.5% which is not bad when you consider the usual response rate for direct mail is below 3%.

The lesson here is to research your target market thoroughly and to have a clear message which will demand attention and cut through the rest of the mail your prospect will receive.

Highlight the benefits of your products or service

As with all copywriting, the message in your direct mail will highlight the benefits of what you?re offering and ideally this message should ?show not tell? your prospective clients the benefits of working with you. Using the Targetbase Claydon Heeley example again, this agency sent out two postcards which arrived a day apart and both ?postcards of the future? were ?sent? by the recipient from 2029. The first postcard featured the recipient having a lovely time on their own paradise island, the second postcard was no so positive and featured the recipient living in Southend and feeling depressed about how things hadn?t gone to plan. The difference was that in the recipient?s rosy, desert island future, they had worked with Targetbase Claydon Heeley and their business had thrived.

Instead of just listing all the features of your product or service in your advert, focus on what it will do for your potential customer and it doesn?t have to be complicated. O2 used a?simple and straightforward direct marketing campaign?which focused on the hectic schedule of IT managers who end up doing all the niggly little jobs in their business. O2 pointed out how they could take care of a company?s mobiles so the IT managers were freed up to do what they should be doing.

Successful direct mail copy highlights the features of a product or service and then shows prospective clients the benefits ? having one without the other will reduce your chances of connecting with your customers.

Close with a strong call-to-action

Make sure your direct mail copywriting tells your recipients what they need to do next.

Without a strong and clear call-to-action, your prospective clients will soon lose interest, no matter how good your direct marketing is.

Send people online to your website or a social media page or simply ask them to call you. In some cases, your call-to-action will be you calling the people you sent the direct mail to so you can follow up your campaign. Whatever the call-to-action, it needs to be in your campaign and it needs to be clear.

Climate Concerns Ebb in Face of Hard Times, Study Says

In recent years, people seem to care less and less about climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions, with surveys showing declines among those who see it as a real problem and worry about the effects.

A recent analysis of public opinion data in the United States and Europe offers an explanation: tough economic times associated with the Great Recession.

Using survey data going back to the late 1990s, researchers looked at other alternative explanations ? media coverage that includes skeptical views on climate change and short-term fluctuations in weather ? could not fully explain the dramatic decline since 2008, when the recession began, according to two researchers. ?

About two decades of Gallup survey data show a strong correlation between unemployment rates and the perception that the media "exaggerate the seriousness of global warming," they found. Even in Europe, where concern and acceptance of climate change science is higher than in the United States, concern declined after the recession hit, according to them. ??

This environment versus prosperity paradigm isn't new.

"The pattern is consistent with more than 40 years of public opinion about environmental policy," write Lyle Scruggs and Salil Benegal of the University of Connecticut in an article published online recently in the journal Global Environmental Change.

People believe addressing climate change will stifle economic growth, and when faced with tough economic times, people want growth. They respond to the conflicting needs by shifting their beliefs about climate change, according to Scruggs and Benegal.??

"Given what we know about recent and historic patterns, it seems probable that climate change opinion will rebound as the economy, and more specifically the job situation, improves," they write. "Both would obviously improve more quickly if planetary stewardship can become a catalyst for economic recovery and transformation, and not instinctively seen as a barrier to that goal."

Samsung, LG and Pantech, among others, fined $40 million in Korean price fixing scam

The truth in advertising is that there is none -- it's mostly all smoke and mirrors. But sometimes those illusory promises have real-world criminal intent behind them, like this latest ruling from the Korean government's corporate regulator. In a decision handed down earlier today, that governing body found mobile phone makers LG, Samsung and Pantech, in addition to operators KT, SK Telecom and LG Upius guilty of price fixing. In what's been framed as a case of consumer fraud, the OEMs reportedly inflated the associated costs of handsets, which were then marketed with supposed discounts by the colluding carriers. Collectively the group's been ordered to pony up about 45.3 billion won (or $40.2 million) in fines, with the largest of those penalties belonging to Samsung at 14.2 billion won (about $12.6 million) and SK Telecom at 20.2 billion won (about $18 million). Adding further insult to this public injury is the FTC, which has taken the extra step of imposing sales restrictions that are intended to prevent the involved parties from committing future infractions. Check out the source below for the full scoop on this corporate back-scratching.

An Overview of Playground Equipment

Children of different age groups love to play in playground equipment as it gives them immense pleasure. Playing in good equipment will stimulate the mind of children, which would further help in keeping them active and agile.

Only reading books and gaining knowledge will not develop the minds of children in an adequate manner. Playing and physical exercise is also a pre requisite as it will help in developing the powers of concentration and improving the dexterity of children. Playing in the outdoors on swings, slides, seesaws and merry go rounds will enable your kid to develop his/her sensory needs, mobility and motor control. Playing on the equipment will definitely allow your little ones to explore, interact with other children and experience many new things in society.

To enhance the physical and mental discipline of the kids, outdoor activities are one of the best avenues.

When children are on the ground they love to join their friends and pass the time in an enjoyable manner by playing with each other. No matter the community, caste or culture that the children belong to they will always try to exchange thoughts, love and affection with their fellow mates.

A Playground that is installed with safe equipment will reduce the worry of the parents for their children. This safe equipment is facilitated at parks, schools, resorts, child care facilities, institutions and recreational developments, where children can play and experience the nuances of life. Apart from the much adored swing set, slide, sand-box, jungle gym, mazes and trapeze, a playground should also have five types of equipment for sliding, spinning, hanging, balancing and climbing.

Children playing on this equipment will have utmost fun and enjoyment.
Talking about sliding equipment, small kids up to age seven can play on this and enjoy their leisure time with full entertainment. The second is the spinning equipment, where kids can sit on the chairs that are fixed on the edge of the rod attached to the central pole and spin round it. A group of at least 10 to 12 children can spin at a time and have real fun playing on this equipment. The third is the climbing equipment, which is one of the most popular and preferred equipment for the kids. These are available in different designs and heights, which helps the children to enjoy the game and get a good dose of exercise. The next is the balancing playground equipment, which is available in different forms including rope bridges, balance beams etc. Children need to stand on the beams by balancing themselves with the help of a rope that is fixed from one end to another. The last type is the hanging equipment, which is also known as monkey bar. These are available in innovative designs such as solid bars, parallel bars, swinging trapeze, up bars and over bars. Running, jumping and playing on this equipment will make your little ones physically fit and mentally strong.

Quakes jolt Japan's tsunami-hit region, Tokyo

AP

A 9.0-magnitude earthquake triggers a tsunami, causing enormous damage and killing thousands.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated at 9:41 a.m. ET: TOKYO -- ?A series of earthquakes rattled Tokyo and northeast Japan late Wednesday evening but caused no apparent damage or injury in the same region hit by last year's devastating tsunami.

The strongest tremor, off Hokkaido island, was 6.9 magnitude and caused tidal changes that prompted some communities to issue evacuation orders or tsunami advisories to residents nearest the coast.

A swelling of 8 inches was observed in the port of Hachinohe in Aomori, northern Japan, about one hour later. Smaller changes were reported in several locations on Hokkaido island and Aomori prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency lifted all tsunami advisories about an hour and half later.

The earthquake felt in Tokyo was magnitude 6.1 and centered just off the coast of Chiba, east of Tokyo, at a rather shallow 6 miles below the sea surface.

The town of Otsuchi in Iwate prefecture, where more than 800 died in last year's tsunami, issued an evacuation order to coastal households as a precaution after the 6.8 quake, said prefectural disaster management official Shinichi Motoyama. No damage or injury was reported, he said.

Nearly a year after an earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan, Fukushima City residents fear the radiation is spreading outside of the government mandated exclusion zone. The government has asked residents to bury radiated soil in their own backyards, but how dangerous is the dirt and where should it go? NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel reports.

Iwate was heavily damaged by last year's earthquake and tsunami. Thousands of aftershocks have shaken the region since then, nearly all of them of minor or moderate strength.

Silence, rallies mark Japan quake anniversary

The magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 left some 19,000 people dead or missing.

That earthquake, Japan's strongest on record, and a massive tsunami, triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Bonnies get No. 14 seed, date with Florida State

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- St. Bonaventure's reward for winning the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament, and dismissing three postseason-worthy opponents in the process, is a date with Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament winner Florida State.

The Bonnies (20-11) earned the No. 14 seed in the East Regional and will play the No.?3-seeded Seminoles (24-9) in the NCAA Tournament second round on Friday in Nashville, Tenn. The winner takes on the winner of No. 11 Texas versus No. 6 Cincinnati in a third-round matchup Sunday.

The Bonnies watched the Selection Show on Sunday from their team hotel at the Sheraton huddled in front of a small television that Athletic Director Steve Watson said "was the size of my steering wheel." About 30 minutes later, the team boarded a bus back to Olean.

"I know they're long, they're athletic, well coached and a good defensive team," Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt said. "They won the ACC Tournament so they're doing something right."

Facing Florida State is a tall order and the kind of effort it took for the Bonnies to knock off Saint Joseph's, Massachusetts and Xavier on consecutive days will be needed.

On Sunday the Seminoles, coached by Leonard Hamilton, became only the second team outside of North Carolina or Duke to win the ACC Tournament championship since 1996. Maryland won the title in 2004 but the Blue Devils have won 10 and the Tar Heels four.

Florida State beat North Carolina on Sunday, 85-82, with Michael Snaer claiming tournament MVP honors, the second time this season the Seminoles have beaten the Tar Heels, who earned a No. 1 seed in the Midwest. The Seminoles are the only conference tournament champion with a No. 3 seed. The others with three seeds are Baylor (27-7), Georgetown (23-8) and Marquette (25-7).

Schmidt acknowledged it will be a difficult game but mentioned "playing with house money" in winning the A-10. Now, St. Bonaventure has more to play with.

"A week ago, two weeks ago, a month ago, nobody thought we were going to make the NCAA Tournament," Schmidt said. "We're going to prepare, we're going to go down to Nashville and give it our best shot, just like we did in this tournament. We're going to play loose and no one is going to expect anything."
