Skype for Windows Phone sheds beta title, graduates to v1.0

Skype's fledgling Windows Phone app broke out of beta today, adding contact searching and landline calling to it's VOIP repertoire. The update comes just shy of two months of the Beta's introduction in February, and boasts a handful of minor improvements that should keep your calls connected. You'll still be making those calls yourself, however, as the full version doesn't yet have support for receiving calls in the background -- if the app isn't running, your phone isn't ringing. Hit the source link below to update.

Florida Elder Law and Estate Planning: Summitt steps down less ...

Pat Summitt, 59, the celebrated coach of the University of Tennessee women's basketball team, resigned her post this week, less than a year after being diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's Disease tends to progress more quickly in younger patients than in older ones. Summitt is one of the 5% of Americans with Alzheimer's Disease diagnosed with the devastating disease before age 65.

My guess is that Summitt has already put her vital legal plans in place. If not, she needs to do so without delay, while she is competent to do so. Summitt has a son with her ex-husband, and she will certainly want to provide for him under her estate plan. ?She also needs a Durable Power of Attorney to allow someone to manage her financial affairs, and?advance health care directives such as a Health Care Power of Attorney?authorizing someone to make her medical decisions for her. A Living Will may be another good idea. We wish Summitt all the best in her journey. If you or a loved one are facing the challenge of Alzheimer's Disease, call our Florida Elder Law Offices?at 800-893-9911 to schedule an appointment for our Boynton Beach, Palm Beach Gardens or Port St. Lucie locations. We will help you set up a legal plan that will protect you, your assets and your family.?Also consider joining The Karp Law Firm in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease. We'll be participating in the Alzheimer's Association's "Memory Walks" scheduled for Oct. 20 in Palm Beach and Nov. 3 in Port St. Lucie. For more information, click here.?

Effects of Child Abuse - Domestic Violence Help

The Devastating Effects of Toxic Relationships and Abusive Parents

About: Effects of Child Abuse

Today in America we are seeing domestic violence and domestic abuse rise at alarming rates and the effects on our children are quite serious. It is estimated that over 5 million children witness domestic violence every year.

Behaviors and Disorders

Children who have witnessed the abusive parents? violence in their homes have significant emotional behaviors such as anxiety, excessive crying, anger, psychosomatic disorders, emotional and mental disorders, depression, bed wetting, social development, emotional development, and chronic school issues.

Also children who witness family abuse can, and many times will grow up to be abusers themselves or victims of abuse.

Girls vs Boys

Although each child responds differently, girls tend to experience low self-esteem and are insecure and marry an abuser; while boys become aggressive and take on the role of an abuser, even at an early age. The boy exhibits his violence towards siblings, pets, school mates, and mother and even becomes the neighborhood bully.

Yet on the contrary, the young boy may take on responsibility for protecting the mother and siblings and when he is unable to he commits suicide or homicide or both. Statistics show that 63% of boys who murder their father are between the ages of 10-20.

Violence Repeated

Over time as young children witness abuse, they begin using rage, violence and attacking others to cope with their own fear and anxiety; when these behaviors don?t relieve them of their fears they start to use drugs and alcohol and sex to numb their pain.

Long term effects on child abuse and the toxic relationship of those who witness abuse are:

General Statistics and Effects of Child Abuse

  • A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds
  • More than five children die every day as a result of child abuse.
  • Approximately 80% of children that die from abuse are under the age of 4.
  • It is estimated that between 50-60% of child fatalities due to maltreatment are not recorded as such on death certificates.
  • More than 90% of juvenile sexual abuse victims know their perpetrator in some way.
  • Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.
  • About 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children, continuing the horrible cycle of abuse.
  • About 80% of 21 year olds that were abused as children met criteria for at least one psychological disorder.
  • The estimated annual cost of child abuse and neglect in the United States for 2008 is $124 billion.
  • Abused children are 25% more likely to experience teen pregnancy.
  • Abused teens are less likely to practice safe sex, putting them at greater risk for STDs.
  • 14% of all men in prison in the USA were abused as children.
  • 36% of all women in prison were abused as children.
  • Children who experience child abuse & neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28% more likely to be arrested as an adult, and 30% more likely to commit violent crime.
  • One-third to two-thirds of child maltreatment cases involve substance use to some degree.
  • Children whose parent?s abuse alcohol and other drugs are three times more likely to be abused and more than four times more likely to be neglected than children from non-abusing families.
  • As many as two-thirds of the people in treatment for drug abuse reported being abused or neglected as children.

PST: Ranking the top MLS goalies

By Round 7 of Major League Soccer the sample of matches is substantial enough to get a decent handle on relative, individual form.

We may not know definitively who still has it in 2012, who lost it, who has more of it, etc. ? but we?re starting to get a pretty good idea.

Besides, ranking the positions is just plain fun, like snow cones or your favorite song cranked up to 11.

So let?s roll! Here are my Top 10 goalkeepers now in MLS. It?s a relative assessment that heavily weighs the here and now (current form) along with some consideration of long-term upside (future potential), all while allowing some small heed to the critical intangible of leadership. Think of it this way: If you started an MLS team today and needed a good goalkeeper for the 2012 season, which one would it be?

Here?s who I would take:

1. Kevin Hartman, FC Dallas

2. Nick Rimando, Real Salt Lake

3. Jon Busch, San Jose???????????????????????

4. Jimmy Nielsen, Sporting Kansas City?????????????? ?????

5. Matt Reis, New England

6. Michael Gspurning, Seattle???????????????

7. Dan Kennedy, Chivas USA?????????????????????

8. Joe Cannon, Vancouver

9. Tally Hall, Houston????????????????????

10. Josh Saunders, L.A. Galaxy

Rational, motive and intent: Hartman?s leadership and shot-stopping for FC Dallas have been nearly flawless since his 2010 arrival into Texas. His ability to deal with crosses isn?t the best in the business, but it?s not so bad that it keeps him off the top of my list.

Between Busch and Rimando, it?s more or less a wash in my book in pure ability; Rimando?s leadership puts him in the No. 2 spot. I haven?t seen enough of Gspurning, but I like what I have seen. Ability-wise, Tally Hall might deserve a slightly higher ranking, but this is just his second season in a starting assignment. Experience counts for a lot, but I might expect him to climb in a year or so. ?

As for the rest ?

There?s a really good crop coming up, and it?s not just two young U.S. internationals, Sean Johnson and Bill Hamid. Chicago?s Paolo Tornaghi, D.C. United?s Joe Willis, Philadelphia?s Zac MacMath and the New York Red Bulls Ryan Meara all show promise.

Toronto?s Stefan Frei would have been Top 5 last year, but a dip in form and a pair of (possibly related) injuries meant that, well, I really didn?t know what to do with Frei for this list.

And Donovan Ricketts, who would definitely have been on the Top 5 at this time last year? He?s had some curiously wobbly moments this year in goal for Montreal.

(AP) ? Norwegians who lost loved ones on Utoya island relived the horror Friday as far-right fanatic Anders Behring Breivik described in harrowing detail how he gunned down teenagers as they fled in panic or froze before him, paralyzed with fear.

Survivors and victims' relatives hugged and sobbed, trying to comfort each other during the graphic testimony.

"I'm going back to my hometown tonight. My husband, he's going to drive me out to the sea, and I'm going to take a walk there and I'm going to scream my head off," said Christin Bjelland, whose teenage son survived the attack.

Breivik's defense lawyers had warned their client's testimony would be difficult to hear. Still, the shock was palpable in the 200-seat courtroom as the self-styled anti-Islamic militant rolled out his gruesome account, without any sign of emotion.

A man who lost a son squeezed his eyes shut, his pain palpable. A man to his left put a comforting hand to his shoulder, while a woman to his right clutched onto him, resting her forehead against his arm.

Tore Sinding Bekkedal, a 24-year-old survivor of the massacre, left the courtroom during Breivik's testimony.

"I could not care less about what he says or the way he says it," Bekkedal said. "I do not care about him as a person."

Breivik has confessed to the July 22 bombing-and-shooting rampage that killed 77 people ? 69 on Utoya and eight in Oslo. But he rejects criminal guilt, saying the victims had betrayed Norway by embracing "Islamic colonization."

Looking tense but focused, Breivik spoke calmly about the shooting rampage, beginning with a ferry ride to the island, where the governing Labor Party holds its annual summer youth camp. He was disguised as a policeman, carrying a rifle and a handgun. He also brought drinking water because he knew he would become parched from the stress of killing people.

Breivik's first victims were Monica Boesei, a camp organizer, and Trond Bentsen, an off-duty police officer and camp security guard.

"My whole body tried to revolt when I took the weapon in my hand. There were 100 voices in may head saying 'Don't do it, don't do it,'" Breivik said.

Nonetheless, he pointed his gun at Berntsen's head and pulled the trigger. He shot Boesei as she tried to run away. Then as they lay on the ground, he shot them both twice in the head.

Breivik said the first shots pushed him into a "fight-and-flight" mode that made it easier to continue killing.

He couldn't remember large chunks of the 90 minutes he spent on the island before surrendering to police commandos. But he recalled some shootings in great detail, including inside a cafe where he mowed down young victims as they pleaded for their lives.

Some teenagers were frozen in panic, unable to move even when Breivik ran out of ammunition. He changed clips. They didn't move. He shot them in the head.

"They cannot run. They stand totally still. This is something they never show on TV," Breivik said. "It was very strange."

The main goal of the trial, now in its fifth day, is to determine whether Breivik was sane or insane ? two medical evaluations have come to opposite conclusions.

"He's completely emotionless," said Paal Groendal, a psychologist who watched Friday's hearing but was not among those who examined the confessed killer.

"He remembers details about smashed windows. But he doesn't remember if it was a boy or girl he shot. .... It seems like he doesn't remember people. To him they are details," Groendal said.

Breivik hunted down victims, luring teens from their hiding places by telling them he was a police officer who was there to protect them. When they came out, he gunned them down.

He said his goal was to kill all of the nearly 600 people on the island. He said he had considered wearing a swastika to instill fear, but decided against it because he didn't want people to think he was a Nazi.

"You will die today Marxists," Breivik recalled shouting.

One man tried to attack him. "I push him away with one hand, and shoot him with the other," Breivik said.

Another man tried to "dodge the bullets by moving in zigzag, so that I couldn't shoot him in the head," he said. "So I shot him in the body instead, quite a few times."

Breivik said he deliberately used "technical" language in order to keep his composure.

"These are gruesome acts, barbaric acts," he said. "If I had tried to use a more normal language I don't think I would have been able to talk about it at all."

Earlier, Breivik said he took to the Internet to glean information, studying attacks by al-Qaida militants, Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

He paid particular attention to the World Trade Center bombing in New York and McVeigh's 1995 attack on an Oklahoma City government building, which killed 168 people and injured over 600.

Breivik said he also read more than 600 bomb-making guides.

He called al-Qaida "the most successful revolutionary movement in the world" and said it should serve as an inspiration to far-right militants, even though their goals are different.

"I have studied each one of their actions, what they have done wrong, what they have done right," Breivik said of al-Qaida. "We want to create a European version of al-Qaida."

Breivik claims to belong to an anti-Muslim network called the "Knights Templar," which prosecutors say they don't believe exists.

If declared sane, Breivik could face a maximum 21-year prison sentence or an alternate custody arrangement that would keep him locked up as long as he is considered a menace to society. If found insane, he would be committed to psychiatric care for as long as he's considered ill.

?In the Studio,? Why Zimride?s John Zimmer Left Wall Street to Start a Company

Screen shot 2012-04-18 at 7.50.56 PM 1"In the Studio" has a special segment this week, hosting a Valley entrepreneur who grew up on the East Coast, studied at an Ivy League school, was lured to Wall Street, and eventually decided to leave the pinstriped suits behind to start building his own startup, eventually finding his cofounder via Facebook, moonlighting as an entrepreneur after the markets closed in NYC, and is now helping run a venture-backed startup that's making a real difference in the world. John Zimmer grew up in a Connecticut suburb outside of New York City, worked hard and made his way to Cornell in upstate New York. In college, he was part of the University's storied "Hotel Management School," taking a specific interest in real estate finance which eventually led him to the real estate finance group of a major New York investment bank. Zimmer felt that the culture around his high school and in parts of college put the lure of investment banking in his sights, but after some time, he developed an itch to try something new despite the chorus around him.

Barclays releases PayTag: the NFC card you glue to your phone (video)

Image

If you don't have a fancy NFC-enabled phone then it's hard to join the mobile wallet club. Fortunately, Barclays has introduced the PayTag that turns any phone into a contactless card. It's a square of plastic a quarter the size of a credit card that's sticky on one side -- yup, you just jam it on the back of your phone and hey presto, you can buy sandwiches, or any purchase up to £15 (£20 from June), without opening your wallet. The sticky squares will be rolling out exclusively to British Barclaycard customers over the next few months, although we're not sure what it'll do to the trade-in value of your handset.

Cybram 001 simulator helps doctors practice brain surgery without risking lives (video)

Sometimes it's awesome to be a guinea pig; take for example, getting down and dirty with the Consumer Preview of Windows 8. When it comes to brain surgery, however, there are no happy little accidents -- and let's face it, Bob Ross would've been a horrible surgeon. Thankfully, a new invention out of Japan promises to keep surgeons from taking practice swings at your noggin. Known as the Cybram 001, it's said to properly simulate the flow and pressure of one's arterial system from the cerebrum to the groin, and should allow doctors to gain greater familiarity with inserting surgical instruments into these delicate spaces. As the entire model is transparent, it's ideal for both students and instructors to see what's being done, and because variables such as blood pressure and heart rate can be adjusted, it's a useful simulator for different scenarios in the operating room. Not all of us will grow up to be brain surgeons, but if you'd like a peek into the frontiers of the field, just hop the break.
