Figure skating's Slipchuk headed to Alberta Sports Hall of Fame ...

By Brian Swane, Examiner Sports

Posted 22 hours ago

1980s Edmonton.

A blue collar city still young enough to be finding its place in the world, the provincial capital defined itself through its sport heroes. So much so, Edmonton adapted the moniker 'City of Champions?.

The Eskimos owned the turf in the first half of the decade, the Oilers ruled the ice in the second half , and there was something brewing in Edmonton?s river valley, where a group of precocious figure skaters at the Royal Glenora Club sat verging on the spectacular.

?It just was a unique time to be in Edmonton and with all the success that was happening around Edmonton, you wanted to be a part of it,? says Michael Slipchuk.

An Edmonton native and proud product of the Glenora?s figure skating heydays, Slipchuk will take his place alongside the club?s most celebrated member, Kurt Browning, as a member of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame during the hall?s 2012 induction ceremony in Red Deer on Friday (May 25).

?Kurt and I grew up together, trained together and competed together, so to be acknowledged in the same hall as Kurt is awesome,? says Slipchuk, who was nicknamed ?Slipper..?

The Glenora?s reputation for nurturing figure skaters was so great that athletes from around the world, including American Kristi Yamaguchi, moved to Edmonton to train. In 1991, the club boasted both the world and men?s and women?s singles champions, in Browning. And Yamaguchi.

Slupchuk wasn?t quite on that level, but at the same time, there were very few in his class. Between 1987 and 1992, he competed at five world championships, placing in the top 10 twice. In 1992 he won his only Canadian title and went on finish ninth at Olympic Games in Albertville, France.

?At the time, getting to the next level was just part of the process, but looking back at it over the years you realize that you were able to compete amongst the best,? says Slipchuk.

Slipchuk is being inducted into the hall as both an athlete and a builder ? his efforts in the latter category include several years coaching in Edmonton and Calgary, and now his current position as the director of high performance of Skate Canada.

It took Slipchuk a while to find his passion. Like most Edmonton kids growing up in that time, Slipchuk?s first love was hockey, but when he was in Pee Wee he tried figure skating.

Eventually, he made the switch full-time after deciding he just wasn?t built for hockey.

?I was about 13 or 14 and at that point I was just realizing I was very small, so it didn?t matter how fast you could skate ?You were in trouble,? he recalls with a laugh.

Slipchuk?s first big win was in 1983, when he became Canada Games men?s figure skating champion. Four years later, he made his World Championship debut, and from that point on, it was all glory all the time at the Glenora: The club was on a yearly basis cranking out elite skaters, including three Olympians in 1992 (Browning, Slipchuk, and Yamaguchi) and four more in 1994 (Susan Humphries. Lisa Sargent, and pairs duo Jamie Sale and Jason Turner).

?The skating we had here was at a high level every day, and that atmosphere really propelled the Royal Glenora Club right into the 90s as the place that people wanted to be in because they were producing a lot of young skaters,? says Slipchuk.

From his current post, which he took in 1996, Slipchuk has overseen a renaissance in Canadian figure skating. This year, for the first time since 1993, the Great White North can claim two world champions, in Patrick Chan and ice dance pair Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue.

Not only does he relish helping this generation of young skaters reach their potential, but Slipchuk says he particularly enjoys working with his peers whom he grew up skating with that are now also working with Skate Canada.

?I couldn?t ask for a better occupation than I have now.?

One simple lifestyle change lowers risk of breast cancer

Losing just a little bit of weight - even 5 percent - can reduce levels of circulating estrogen that lead to breast cancer. Researchers from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, in a first study, showed high risk post-menopausal women who exercised and dieted for weight loss lowered their levels of sex hormones that lead to aggressive types of breast cancer. The intervention is a drug-free; simple approach that any woman can accomplish. Medications taken to thwart breast cancer block estrogen receptors but have side effects that are intolerable for some. The study showed diet and exercise to reduce body fat and weight can have a positive effect for thwarting the disease.

The researchers explored data from four groups of women from the Seattle area who were sedentary, overweight or obese; age 50 to 75. At the end of the study sex hormones were measured, including estrone, (estradiol and free estradiol); two types of testosterone (total testosterone and free testosterone.)

The women were assigned exercise ? primarily brisk walking - diet, exercise plus dieting or no intervention.

Women who exercised and who exercised and dieted both met the goal of 10 percent weight-loss.

After weight loss all of the women had lower hormone levels, but the results were greater for women who dieted and exercised.

Anne McTiernan, M.D., Ph.D said in a press release, ?The amount of weight lost was key to changes in hormone levels. The biggest effect was through diet plus exercise; exercise by itself didn?t produce much of a change in weight or estrogen.? For the long-term she recommends women do both to keep weight off and keep estrogen levels down.

Researchers suspect breast cancer risk goes up 30% for women who are overweight and also have a gene variant that is expressed in breast tissue. Findings published May, 2011, from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, found a link between the FTO gene that everyone has. Women who have a variant of the gene are more prone to obesity and breast cancer.

McTiernan cautions that the finding only applies to overweight or obese women who are not taking hormone replacement therapy.

Losing just 5 percent of body fat that contributes to estrogen production had a beneficial effect for raising levels of a protein known as SHBG that binds to sex hormones and makes them less biologically active; in turn lowering the chances of breast cancer. The finding is published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

The finding shows weight loss and diet to reduce body fat ? even if it?s just 5% - is a simple drug-free intervention for women for lowering their breast cancer risk. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, cut your calorie intake, consume plenty of fiber and walk briskly.

Allowing the Mind To Wander Aids Creative Problem Solving

Meth should be illegal because 99.9% of meth users eventually start stealing or killing to support their habit

As an ex totally legit chemist not involved even remotely in the amateur pharm trade, I none the less know that the cost of precursor chemicals would make legal meth roughly (very roughly) as expensive as your average OTC generic pharmaceutical. There's nothing in that chemical structure that should cost much more than psuedoephedrine cold medicine and its biologically active "around" that level. A couple days worth of the stuff, if legalized, would cost about as much as a weeks worth of cold medicine, in other words pretty damn cheap compared to the cost of food, etc.

When you have to steal copper cable every day to get one day's illegal supply society has a big problem. When the cost of a 6-pack of beer is more than the cost of a months supply then society has no real problem. It is true that scum occasionally kill for the cost of a soda, but its rare enough to be an outlier, thankfully.

It would be cheap enough that junkyards could give it away in order to improve their public image (hey general public, we don't accept stolen goods anymore because we give the addicts stuff for free, so stop blaming us for your stolen catalytic converters, mkay?)

Its much harder on the body than alcohol, so unlike drinking where you have senior citizen bums, meth heads, especially if given all-you-can-smoke-for-free would not live long, leading to a ridiculously lower total lifetime cost and a much smaller population.

CableWiFi to offer more than 50000 free access points to cable ...

Five major U.S. cable companies have teamed up to offer more than 50,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots to subscribers. The service will be known as ?CableWiFi,? and will be offered to customers of Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable. The service initially launched in New York City and central Florida earlier May, and is set to expand to other markets in the coming months. ?This effort adds great value to our high speed Internet customers by providing free wireless Internet access on all of their WiFi enabled devices in our markets and additional areas across the country,? said Nomi Bergman, President of Bright House Networks. The joint press release follows below.

Major U.S. Cable Companies Join Forces on WiFi

Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable Will Share Access to over 50,000 Hotspots, Expand WiFi Availability and Simplify Access for their High Speed Internet Customers

BOSTON?(BUSINESS WIRE)?Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable today announce that they will enable each other?s high-speed Internet customers to access their metro WiFi networks, totaling over 50,000 hotspots. To simplify access, a new network name, ?CableWiFi?, has been created for subscribers to use when accessing the WiFi hotspots outside their home market. The first implementation is already complete as Bright House Networks and Cablevision launched ?CableWiFi? alongside their branded WiFi networks in the New York City area and central Florida earlier this month. Over the next few months, the ?CableWiFi? network name will be added by each of the cable companies to their branded WiFi hotspots.

?This effort adds great value to our high speed Internet customers by providing free wireless Internet access on all of their WiFi enabled devices in our markets and additional areas across the country,? said Nomi Bergman, President of Bright House Networks.

?We believe that WiFi is a superior approach to mobile data, and that cable providers are best positioned to build the highest-capacity national network offering customers fast and reliable Internet connections when away from their home or business broadband service,? said Kristin Dolan, Cablevision?s senior executive vice president of product management and marketing. ?We?ve built an extensive WiFi network in our own service area, and see real value and potential in other leading providers joining with us to extend that connectivity to major markets across the country.?

Dave Watson, Chief Operating Officer of Comcast Cable added, ?Mobility is an increasingly important part of our Xfinity services product roadmap. WiFi technology, coupled with our agreements with Verizon Wireless, are two significant ways we are executing on our strategy to deliver the best in- and out-of-home communications experience for our customers.?

?The way customers are using our service continues to evolve,? said Jill Campbell, Cox Communications COO. ?This is a new area of opportunity that we need to explore.?

?We have long been the leading providers of high-speed internet services in our customers? homes. Through our rollout of WiFi and the benefits of this collaboration we greatly increase the value and reach of our high-speed internet service, providing access to broadband outside the home and in cities across the country,? said Rob Marcus, President and COO of Time Warner Cable.

When traveling outside their home markets, high-speed Internet subscribers of the participating companies will look for the ?CableWiFi? network and through a simple sign-on process connect using the same credentials as when accessing their providers? WiFi networks. In the coming months, users will be able to have their devices auto-connect to the Internet when located in any of the ?Cable WiFi? hotspots.

The participating cable operators currently offer more than 50,000 WiFi hotspots located in New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area, Los Angeles, Tampa, Orlando, and Philadelphia. The operators plan to continue to grow the number of WiFi hotspots and expand into several additional cities. The network has both indoor and outdoor WiFi hotspots located in popular, high traffic locations, such as shopping districts, cafes, malls, arenas, restaurants, parks and beaches. Subscribers will be able to find the nearest WiFi hotspots by visiting the WiFi homepage of their current cable provider or going to www.cablewifi.com.

This is the largest and most inclusive WiFi sharing effort among cable operators to date. In early 2010, Cablevision, Comcast and Time Warner Cable entered into an agreement allowing their customers in New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Connecticut to access WiFi hotspots offered by each operator in these areas.

Re-Financing-With-A-Line-Of-Credit-Loan | TravelBuddies.us ...

Re-Financing with a Line of Credit Loan

Some homeowners might consider re-financing with a home equity line of credit as opposed to a traditional loan. There are definite advantages and disadvantages to these types of situations. The key to understanding whether or not re-financing with a home equity line of credit is worthwhile involves understanding what a home equity line of credit is, how it differs from a home loan and how it can be used. This article will briefly cover each of these topics to give the homeowner some useful information which may help them decide whether or not a home equity line of credit is ideal in their re-financing situation.

What is a Home Equity Line of Credit?

A home equity line of credit, sometimes called a HELOC, is essentially a loan in which funds are made available to the homeowner based on the existing equity in the home. However, in this case, it is not really a loan but rather a line of credit. This means a certain amount of money is made available to the homeowner and the homeowner may draw on this line of credit as funds are needed. There is a specified period in which the homeowner is able to make these withdrawals. This is known as the draw period. Additionally there is a repayment period in which the homeowner must repay all of the funds they withdrew from the account during the draw period.

How Does a Home Equity Line of Credit Differ from a Home Equity Loan?

The difference between a home equity line of credit and a home equity loan is really quite simple. While both loans are secured based on the existing equity in the home, the manner in which the funds are disbursed to the homeowner is rather quite different. In a home equity loan the homeowner is given all of the funds immediately. However in a home equity line of credit the funds are made available to the homeowner but are not immediately disbursed. The homeowner is able to draw against this line of credit as he sees fit. There are limits to the amount which can be withdrawn and there is also a limit on when funds can be withdrawn. A home equity has a draw period and a repayment period. Funds can be withdrawn during the draw period but must be repaid during the repayment period.

How Can a Home Equity Line of Credit Be Used?

One of the biggest advantages of a home equity line of credit is that the funds can be used for any purpose specified by the homeowner. While other loans such as an auto loan or even a traditional mortgage might have strict restrictions on how the money lent to the homeowner can be used, there are no such restrictions on a home equity line of credit. Common uses of a home equity line of credit include the following:

* Home renovations or improvement projects
* Opening a small business
* Taking a dream vacation
* Pursuing higher educational goals
* Opening a small business

In some cases the interest paid on a home equity line of credit may be considered tax deductible. This may apply in situations where the funds are used to make repairs or improvements to the home. However, these expenses are not always tax deductible and the homeowner should consult with a tax professional before making decisions regarding which interest payments can be deducted.

Mali president beaten during palace occupation

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Mali's caretaker president Dioncounda Traore was beaten up and hospitalized after hundreds of protesters stormed his palace on Monday to demand his resignation, officials and several protesters said.

A spokesman for the soldiers behind a March 22 coup said Traore's close-protection officers had killed three people in the attack, in which protesters entered parts of the palace compound unopposed and tore up pictures of Traore.

Mali is struggling to cope with the aftermath of the coup and a subsequent rebellion in its desert north. Sanogo agreed at the weekend to drop objections to Traore remaining in charge but crowds took to the streets on Monday calling for him to quit.

Resolving the political crisis in the capital Bamako is a pre-requisite for foreign help in efforts to retake control of the north, now in the hands of separatist and Islamist rebels, including some al Qaeda fighters.

"He (Traore) has just been rushed to hospital ... They beat him seriously and tore his clothes," Bakary Mariko, spokesman for the CNRDRE body of soldiers who last month agreed to allow a transition back to civilian rule, said by telephone.

Sekou Sidibe, a witness, said that Traore had received injuries to the face and had been escorted to hospital by the country's interim prime minister and his bodyguards.

An aide to Traore said later that he had left hospital and had returned to his personal residence. It was not immediately clear when he would return to the palace compound.

Soldiers at the palace stood by as the civilians entered buildings on the compound while others clambered over armored vehicles parked nearby. Some protesters parked their motorbikes and bicycles in rooms in the palace.

"This is a spontaneous crowd. There were three dead and some injured by gunshot amongst the demonstrators. Dioncounda's security shot at people," Mariko said.

By mid-afternoon, the protesters had left, he said.

"DOWN WITH ECOWAS"

The protest, reflecting longstanding popular frustrations with Mali's political class, came despite Sanogo agreeing at the weekend to let Traore remain in charge for a year to oversee the full transition to civilian rule in return for securing the status and privileges accorded to former heads of state.

The coup was launched by soldiers complaining about conditions they were sent to fight northern rebels in but unintentionally emboldened the insurgents, including Islamists linked to al Qaeda, to seize two-thirds of the country.

The occupation of the presidential palace came after protesters also paralyzed traffic and blocked bridges with burning tires in the capital Bamako.

"There is no question of Dioncounda staying as president of Mali," said Daouda Diallo, one demonstrator amongst the group that marched up the hill to the presidential palace.

Demonstrators chanted slogans hostile to the 15-state West African regional bloc ECOWAS, which had threatened sanctions against Sanogo unless he allows Traore to remain in charge.

Traore is a labor activist turned political grandee who before his appointment last month as caretaker president was national parliament speaker. He held various ministerial jobs in the 1990s and is seen by his critics as part of a self-serving political elite that has misruled the country for years.

"We don't want Dioncounda" and "Down with ECOWAS" chanted some in the crowd.

"I am here because I am against Dioncounda. We don't want him in charge," said Bourama Sidy Coulibaly, another protester. "ECOWAS should not be meddling in Malian affairs."

ECOWAS has pledged to send a 3,000-strong force to Mali to help it restore its authority in the north, but it has not made any commitment to actually send troops to fight in the north and its precise mandate remains under discussion.

San Marino considers rule to allow residents to keep chickens

Pam King's San Marino home has solar panels, a drought-resistant yard and an urban farm. Now she'd like some chickens to go with it.

The city known as the wealthiest, quietest suburban enclave in the San Gabriel Valley doesn't allow residents to keep farm animals, but that may soon change. This month King asked the San Marino City Council to allow chickens on residential properties, and council members ordered a staff report.

If San Marino goes to the birds, it would join Pasadena, South Pasadena and La Ca?ada Flintridge, which allow residents to keep fowl under strict guidelines.

In Pasadena the maximum number of chickens on a property is 10, and they cannot be kept within 50 feet of a property line. The city doesn't allow roosters more than four months old.

South Pasadena residents have higher chicken limits, but if they have more than a dozen, the chickens must be kept at least 200 feet from the neighbors. Residents with fewer than a dozen chickens need only keep them 15 feet or more from the property line and 50 feet or more from a dwelling other than the resident's home.

In La Ca?ada most residences are limited to three chickens, though people with larger lots can have more if they house the fowl appropriately. Roosters more than two months old are prohibited.

At the San Marino City Council's direction, staffers looking into a law will pay particular attention to coop size and location, the number of chickens to allow, discouraging commercial gain and possibly requiring a permit.

King said she buys a lot of organic chicken manure for her garden and hopes to host up to six chickens in order to get a dozen eggs a week.

"I think it's a positive step to grow my own food, not rely on trucks and shipping from all over the world and make sure the stuff we're eating at this house is pretty organic," she said.

King is among a growing number of city people who want a slice of farm life in their backyards. Websites including urbanchickens.org, thecitychicken.com and madcitychickens.com have sprung up to offer newbies advice on how to keep their fowl.

Lora Hall founded Los Angeles Urban Chicken Enthusiasts in August 2009 after she began keeping chickens at her Silver Lake home.

The group now touts 800 members who give each other advice online and meet to discuss urban farming.

Hall said there is spreading interest in creating legislation to allow urbanites to keep hens and roosters and to update old laws from the 1940s and '50s.

"They're small flocks," she said. "People aren't looking for a commercial egg-laying operation. A lot of cities realize this and are making accommodations."

Hall said a common mistake among chicken owners is failure to predator-proof their coops.

"Here in the city, we have a lot more wildlife than we see during the day," she warned.

Ron Kean, a poultry advisor for madcitychickens.com in Madison, Wis., said members of the group considered themselves the chicken underground until pushing the city to legalize urban chicken ownership in 2005.

Kean said those who think they will be able to reduce their grocery budget are in for a surprise.

"I have not talked to anybody who did this who said it saved them money," Kean said. Still, he added, "I would encourage it."

Hall noted that a common question is what to do with a chicken too old to produce eggs.

"Do you keep it as a pet? Do you run a chicken retirement home?" Hall, who has six chickens, asked. "It's important not to jump into it too fast."
