With six gold medals and a bronze under its belt and five days left in the 2012 Olympics, Kazakhstan is placed eighth, ahead of Germany and Australia for gold medals. In terms of gold medals per capita, Kazakhstan ranks fifth worldwide. Not bad for a country that only began to compete in the Olympics in 1994, two years after it became independent.

No doubt decades of Soviet rule influenced not only architecture, education, and government in Kazakhstan, but also its effective approach to sports training.

So what, exactly, is Kazakhstan medaling in?

The horsemeat advantage

Ilya Ilin took the gold and broke a new world record for the men's 94 kilogram weightlifting class when he hefted 418 kilograms, 12 kilos more than he lifted in Beijing when he won gold for total lifted. The 24-year-old two-time Olympic champion attributes his success to kazy ? horsemeat sausage.?

Svetlana Podobedova, who left her home country, Russia, after she was cut from the national weightlifting team for doping in 2007, narrowly beat Russia's weightlifter in the 75 kilogram class.

Maiya Maneza won the women's 63 kilogram weightlifting class. At age 26, she set?a new Olympic record of 245 kg?when she added a 135 kg clean and jerk to her 110 kg snatch.?(She took gold medals in the 2010 Asian Games, the 2010 World Weightlifting Championships, and the 2009 World Weightlifting Championships).

Teenager Zulfiya Chinshanlo won the women's 53 kilogram division with a new world record, lifting 226 kg. That was?Kazhakstan's second gold of the 2012 Olympic Games.?

On the sidelines, a small birther controversy has erupted. There are mixed reports on where exactly Maneza and Chinshanlo were born. Some claim that they were born in China or Kyrgyzstan. The Central Asian nation has responded pretty quickly and adamantly to reports that Maneza and Chinshanlo were born and raised in China.

President Nursultan Nazarbayev rewarded the pair with $250,000 each and hailed their wins as "proud glories" from "outstanding daughters of our nation."

Running and cycling, too

The Central Asian nation has topped the charts in other sports too.?

Olga Rypakova picked up a track-and-field gold for Kazakhstan in the women's triple jump. It's a unique event that combines a hop, a step, and a flying leap. The 27-year-old's 14.98-meter effort was enough to surpass the favorite, Olha Saladuha of Ukraine.

And 38-year-old Alexandre Vinokourov cycled past Colombia's Rigoberto Uran in the final stages of the men's road race to take the gold, leaving Norway's Alexander Kristoff finishing third on July 28. Kazakhstan and Mr. Vinokourov are no strangers to cycling: Among the athlete's accomplishments are four stage wins of the Tour de France,?two bronze medals at the World Championships, a silver at the 2000 Summer Olympics,?and the fact that he has been a known challenger to Lance Armstrong in the past.?

Happy with his time of 5:45:57, he then announced he was considering retiring.?

But Kazakhstan won't likely be retiring from racking up the medals?any time soon.?Watch the upcoming boxing and wrestling matches for more of the shiny stuff, as Kazakhstan bests its 2008 Beijing performance. (Already,?Danyal Gajiyev has taken bronze?in the?men's 84kg Greco-Roman wrestling category.)

Kazakhstan came home from Beijing with two golds (boxing and weightlifting), four silvers (judo, weightlifting, and wrestling), and seven bronze medals (boxing, judo, taekwondo, weightlifting, and wrestling) to finish 29th overall.

NASA braces for rover's plunge to Mars

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? NASA's most high-tech Mars rover on Sunday zeroed in on the red planet where it will attempt a tricky celestial gymnastics routine during a "seven minutes of terror" plummet through the atmosphere.

The Curiosity rover was poised to hit the top of the Martian atmosphere at 13,000 mph. If all goes according to script, it will be slowly lowered by cables inside a massive crater in the final few seconds.

NASA was ready for the "Super Bowl of planetary exploration," said Doug McCuistion, head of the Mars exploration program at NASA headquarters.

"We score and win or we don't score and we don't win," said McCuistion.

If all goes well, mission control at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory should hear a signal at 10:31 p.m. Pacific. The space agency warned that confirmation could take longer if an orbiting spacecraft that's supposed to listen for Curiosity during the descent is not in the right place.

Curiosity's trajectory was so accurate that engineers decided to wave off a last chance to tweak its position before atmosphere entry.

"We're ready to head in," said mission manager Brian Portock.

Not ones to tempt fate, flight controllers planned to break out the "good luck" peanuts before Curiosity takes the plunge as part of a long-running tradition.

One scientist who can relate to the building anxiety is Cornell University planetary scientist Steve Squyres, who headed NASA's last successful rover mission in 2004.

This time around, Squyres has a supporting role and planned to view the landing with other researchers in the "science bullpen."

"Landing on Mars is always a nerve-racking thing. You're never going to get relaxed about something like landing a spacecraft on Mars," said Squyres.

Sunday's touchdown attempt was especially intense because NASA is testing a brand new landing technique. Due to the communication delay between Mars and Earth, Curiosity will be on autopilot. There's also extra pressure because budget woes have forced NASA to rejigger its Mars exploration roadmap.

"There's nothing in the pipeline" beyond the planned launch of a Mars orbiter in 2013, said former NASA Mars czar Scott Hubbard, who teaches at Stanford University.

Curiosity was launched to study whether the Martian environment ever had conditions suitable for microbial life.

The voyage to Mars took over eight months and spanned 352 million miles. The trickiest part of the journey? The landing. Because Curiosity weighs nearly a ton, engineers drummed up a new and more controlled way to set the rover down.

The last Mars rovers, twins Spirit and Opportunity, were cocooned in air bags and bounced to a stop in 2004.

The plans for Curiosity called for a series of braking tricks, similar to those used by the space shuttle, and a supersonic parachute to slow it down. Next: Ditch the heat shield used for the fiery descent.

And in a new twist, engineers came up with a way to lower the rover by cable from a hovering rocket-powered backpack. At touchdown, the cords cut and the rocket stage crashes a distance away.

The nuclear-powered Curiosity, the size of a small car, is packed with scientific tools, cameras and a weather station. It sports a robotic arm with a power drill, a laser that can zap distant rocks, a chemistry lab to sniff for the chemical building blocks of life and a detector to measure dangerous radiation on the surface.

It also tracked radiation levels during the journey to help NASA better understand the risks astronauts could face on a future manned trip.

After several weeks of health checkups, the six-wheeled rover could take its first short drive and flex its robotic arm.

The landing site near Mars' equator was picked because there are signs of water everywhere, meeting one of the requirements for life as we know it. Inside Gale Crater is a 3-mile-high mountain, and images from space show the base appears rich in minerals that formed in the presence of water.

Previous trips to Mars have uncovered ice near the Martian north pole and evidence that water once flowed when the planet was wetter and toastier unlike today's harsh, frigid desert environment.

Curiosity's goal: To scour for basic ingredients essential for life, including carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur and oxygen. It's not equipped to search for living or fossil microorganisms. To get a definitive answer, a future mission needs to fly Martian rocks and soil back to Earth to be examined by powerful laboratories.

The mission comes as NASA retools its Mars exploration strategy. Faced with tough economic times, the space agency pulled out of partnership with the European Space Agency to land a rock-collecting rover in 2018. The Europeans have since teamed with the Russians as NASA decides on a new roadmap.

Despite Mars' reputation as a spacecraft graveyard, humans continue their love affair with the planet, lobbing spacecraft in search of clues about its early history. Out of more than three dozen attempts ? flybys, orbiters and landings ? by the U.S., Soviet Union, Europe and Japan since the 1960s, more than half have ended disastrously.

One NASA rover that defied expectations is Opportunity, which is still busy wheeling around the rim of a crater in the Martian southern hemisphere eight years later.

How To Design Competition Leotards For Girls

Gymnastic apparel may seem to be a very simple and easily tailored garment at a first glance. However, it is rather a challenging task to choose or to produce a leo which will meet all of the functional and aesthetic requirements of professional sportswear. It is not only a vivid outfit the gymnasts wear to attract attention but also a safe costume that prevents acrobats from mistakes and traumas. As you may already know, there exist two main types of gymnastics leotards for girls: those for workouts and those for tournaments. In this brief yet informative post we are going to share some interesting ideas on creating great competition apparel.

The Spirit of the Outfit

Whether you choose or design gymnastic uniform for a school team or an individual athlete, you have to stick to the central theme of the whole performance. It is really amazing when colors and ornaments of the apparel reflect the spirit of music, team's name or even school colors (you may use one color as a base and the rest in the form of embellishments). You may also make a gorgeous embroidery with the team's or school's name: it can go vertically, horizontally or diagonally. The outside of the letters can be embroidered with crystals or rhinestones. When creating a design sample do not forget to keep in mind team's preferences: girls can even vote for different ideas. It is very important, since athletes should like their outfit and feel comfortable not only physically, but morally.

The design of gymnastics leotards for girls should not be overwhelming, keep the design simple. Too much sparkling details and sophisticated embellishments can distract judges from the performance. The athlete's costume should emphasize the natural beauty of a well developed body and match with the main dance theme, but it should not be a focal point of the whole performance. Professional designers recommend using abstract themes for gymnastics apparel, while using pictures of the already existing shapes and animals (mascots) may turn distracting.

Getting Ready

It is important to get the leos ready in advance so that the girls can try them on and have a test workout. A perfect gymnastic uniform must be skin tight, bring a feeling of confidence and safety. There must be enough room for legs and arms for comfortable movements.

If the team or an individual athlete may participate in an official tournament, different rules regulating sportswear can exist. As a rule they coincide with international standards, which are quite simple and sensible. When designing or selecting leos make sure they meet all of the requirements. These will usually include the following: the leg holes must be tailored lower than the pelvic zone, the underwear (including sports bra) must be invisible, spaghetti straps and midriffs are also forbidden. As a rule, sportswear retailers follow these recommendations, however, we recommend you to be attentive when choosing outfits for your kids.

Fitness and Nutrition Center: How To Build Muscle Fast - Naturally

There are many different training techniques and styles out there that can help you build muscle fast, from kettle ball training, to bodyweight-only training, 100 rep training, P90x and the list goes on an on. However, the number one and most effective way to pack on muscle fast is to train bodybuilding style.

Now, I'm not saying that you can't build muscle using different training techniques like some of the ones that I've outlined above, but rather, if your goal is to increase the size of your muscles and attain a lean, strong, hard and muscular body quickly, then the best way to get there is to train like a bodybuilder.

And by train like a "bodybuilder", I'm not referring to flipping open a bodybuilding magazine and copying the training routines that professional bodybuilders do. Assuming that you weight train without the assistance from anabolic steroids, you'll do nothing more than over-train and injure yourself and even worse, you can actually lose muscle mass by following a pro bodybuilders training routine.

To build muscle naturally, or without the assistance form anabolic steroids, you still need to train like a bodybuilder, but with some changes to your training and nutrition program.

Just to clear things up before we dive into the details, the word "natural" in bodybuilding refers to building muscle without the assistance from drugs, which include anabolic steroids, HGH or human growth hormone, thyroid hormone or any other substance that can only be acquired with a doctors prescription.

Using dietary supplements that can be purchased at health food shops and grocery stores such as whey protein, creatine, and various vitamins and minerals is considered "natural" in bodybuilding.

How to Build Muscle Naturally - Weight Training

In order to make fast and consistent gains in muscle size and strength naturally, lifting heavy weights with good form must be your #1 priority. Nothing else will help you build muscle and gain weight faster then heavy and consistent training with barbells and dumbbells.

If you are just starting out training with weights, you should train no more than 3 days a week on a non-consecutive schedule. This will allow the muscles that you've trained enough time to recover and re-build in-between workouts. If you already have a year or two of training experience, you can train up to 4 times per week.

Focus on getting stronger in every workout or increasing the amount of reps that you do. The Progressive Overload principle means to train with progressively heavier weights over time in order to avoid hitting a plateau.

For example, if you've been lifting the same amount of weight for the past 3 months on the bench press, then you've probably hit a plateau, which means that in order to continue getting bigger and stronger, you'll have to either get stronger on the bench press or do a few more repetitions than you did the last time you performed the bench press.

If you focus on increasing your weights every 2 to 3 weeks, then you'll make consistent progress in the gym because you're following the progressive overload principle.

There are many other weight training factors that will determine how fast and how effectively you'll be able to pack on muscle mass, but for the purpose of this article, the progressive overload principle is the most important technique to be aware of.

How to build Muscle Naturally - Diet

To pack on lean muscle mass without gaining excessive body fat, you'll have to eliminate any and all junk food from your diet. This means no candy bars, chips, ice cream, doughnuts, French fries, pizza and other similar processed/pre-packaged foods.

To gain muscle without getting fat, your focus should be on eating foods that contain plenty of vitamins and minerals as well as protein and good carbohydrates. Focus on eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables every day including; apples, oranges, grapes, mango, pineapple, tomatoes, carrots, dark green lettuce, spinach and other similar fruits and vegetables.

These foods will help keep your immune system strong to ensure that you don't miss training days due to illness or a cold. Next up you'll have to emphasize eating more protein at every meal. Eat lean protein foods such as lean ground beef, lean turkey burgers, reduced-fat milk, chicken breast and lean cuts of red meat such as steak.

And last but not least, to build muscle and gain weight fast, you'll have to eat plenty of complex or slow-digesting carbohydrates such as oatmeal, whole-wheat pasta, whole-wheat bread, bran cereal, sweet potatoes as well as the fruits and vegetables that I've listed above, as they are all good sources of complex carbohydrates.

Also, focus on consuming plenty of healthy omega-3 fats that are proven to reduce muscle inflammation caused by heavy and intense weight training. Omega-3 fats are found in Olive oil, natural peanut butter, almonds, fish and avocados.

With most of Britain on tender hooks waiting for the first gold medal, after five days Heather Stanning and Helen Glover came up with the goods in the coxless pairs. 30,000 fans watched and cheered at Eton Dorney as the pair rowed to victory and it was a great moment in British Olympic history. Not only is it the first gold medal for Great Britain, but they are the first women to win a rowing medal at an Olympic games. They also broke an Olympic record in their first race.

Glover maintains that their effort was for the whole British team and the whole country. Their achievement certainly serves as an inspiration to us all. We can not only vicariously experience the pleasure of their triumph, but also dream of what goals we can reach ourselves.? We might not all win races, but we can certainly achieve a great deal in terms of fitness. Exceeding personal goals is possible to everyone with the right attitude, effort and guidance from an expert such as a personal trainer.

Some of our own personal trainers have reached great heights in their sporting careers and we have personal trainers with us who have won medals in a wide range of sports from horse riding to karate. They learn so much from their personal sporting journey that they yearn to inspire others to reach their own optimum level of fitness. PE teacher Glover hopes to inspire kids who are thinking about taking up a new sport, encouraging them to just go for it as you don?t know what?s going to happen.

Glover, aged 26 maintains that if you work hard, you can do anything and her hard work paid off so much so that she could afford a smile during the last 250m of the race. She didn?t even start rowing until 2008 and has achieved so much in a mere 4 years. Her background was in cross-country running and hockey until she found out about a scheme funded by the lottery called Sporting Giants which searched for future Olympians. Glover was picked for the rowing programme and Stanning was also chosen to be part of the scheme. The 27 year old Stanning was predicted to win a gold medal by her fellow pupils at school and started rowing aged 19 prompted by her friends who encouraged her to try rowing because she was tall. She has put her career as a Royal Artillery officer in the army on hold to compete and said thanks for all the support in Afghanistan.

The pair only teamed up 2 years ago and said they bounce off each other even though they have different personalities. The British public are amazed at what they have attained in such a short space of time. They started their rowing training having already achieved a high level of fitness and were then coached by Robin Williams in order to reach peak condition and hone their technique to win Olympic gold. It is this input from an expert such as a personal trainer who knows how to get the best out someone that makes all the difference when it comes to reaching fitness goals. Results don?t have to be medals to be inspiring. A person whose mobility has increased due to personal training can mean a life that is so much more enjoyable to live and increased fitness means that in all likelihood that person will also live longer too and so have more time to reap the benefits of their hard work.

Toll in Uganda's Ebola outbreak rises to 16: WHO

The latest outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus has killed 16 people in Uganda, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday, increasing the previous toll by one.

"Today we have 50 suspected cases and 16 dead," WHO spokesman Tarek Jasarevic told reporters in Geneva.

For the time being the epidemic was restricted to the west of the country, Jasarevic said, adding that a single case reported in Kampala in the south of the country was the result of an infected person being brought to the capital.

Ebola broke out in early July in Uganda's western Kibale district, some 200 kilometres (120 miles) from Kampala, and around 50 kilometres from the border with Democratic Republic of Congo.

The virus causes internal and external bleeding and spreads by direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of infected persons, according to the World Health Organization.

The rare haemorrhagic disease, named after a small river in DR Congo, killed 37 people in western Uganda in 2007 and at least 170 in the north of the country in 2000.

Neighbouring nations -- including Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and Tanzania -- have warned people to report to health centres in case of Ebola-like symptoms.
